Day one of the four-day noise/experimental Neon Marshmallow Festival begins tonight at the Viaduct Theater (3111 N. Western Ave.). The Neo-Futurists kick off their 2010-11 series with Daredevils' Hamlet, a combination of the Shakespeare play and the Neos' 2005 show Daredevils, which featured a cast going through a series of physical and emotional stunts & challenges. Daredevils' Hamlet is in previews tonight and tomorrow, and opens on Saturday, August 21. Shows are at 8pm on all nights. Tickets are $15, $10 for students/seniors with ID, or pay-what-you-can on Thursday nights. The show runs at the Neo-Futurarium through September 25. Sheffield's, Lakeview's beer-and-barbecue stalwart, is throwing itself a 30th birthday party, with a little help from Goose Island. Chicago's largest brewery will take over the taps at Sheffield's, pouring 36 different draft beers. Twenty-five bucks will get you 1) in the doors an hour before the general public and 2) a commemorative Goose Island Invasion glass. All the better to toast you with, my dear. VIP hour starts at 6 p.m.; doors open to the public at 7.
Hop on a trolley and join the Chicago Bar Project's Sean Parnell from 6-10:00pm on this tour of historic watering holes along what was the city's Polish Broadway. A former burlesque theater, betting parlor and speakeasy are among the stops, which also include a visit to Chicago's original beer bar. Tickets must be purchased online in advance and cost $30 per person or $50 per couple. The tour fee includes a signed copy of Parnell's Historic Bars of Chicago.
Join the Chicago History Museum tonight (6:45-10pm) for a trolley tour of some of the city's finest pubs along the river and lake. Cost $25-30.
