Today kicks off Chicago Chef Week, which means $22 lunch/$33 dinner prix-fixe menus at a range of nice places such as Avec, Lockwood and Sepia. Runs through March 26.
The Chicago Jazz Ensemble's final performance of the season is a tribute to Mahalia Jackson on what would have been her 100th birthday, tonight at 8pm at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph St. Tickets are $15 to $45, with discounts for senior citizens and groups. Student tickets are $5. Tickets can be purchased at 312-334-7777, at the Harris Theater box office or online.
Five of Chicago's most respected chefs face off at this pig-centric event. Three Floyds Brewpub's Mike Sheerin, Sepia's Andrew Zimmerman, Mercat a la Planxa's Michael Fiorello, Girl and the Goat's Stephanie Izard and The Bristol's Chris Panel will each prepare from snout to tail a heritage breed hog. An equally illustrious panel of 20 local judges will choose a winner based on presentation, utilization and overall best flavor, but attendees get to sample it all paired with five wines provided by Alysian, Chase Family Cellars, Copain Wines, Elk Cove Vineyards and Red Car Wine. General admission tickets to Cochon 555 are $125 per person with entry at 5:00pm. V.I.P. tickets are $175 with entrance at 3:30pm and a cheese and oyster reception with reserve drinks. Advance purchase is suggested. The Renaissance Blackstone Hotel is located at 636 S. Michigan Ave.
This month's reading hosted by What to Wear During an Orange Alert will take place tonight at The Whistler (2421 N. Milwaukee Ave), starting at 6pm. Admission is free and featured readers include Victor David Giron, James Payne, Luis Humberto Valadez, Natalie Edwards, and Ben Tanzer.
