The Felice Brothers and Shovels & Ropes @ Lincoln Hall

Friday night the self-taught, former NYC subway musicians, The Felice Brothers , are celebrating the upcoming release of their fourth LP, Celebration, Florida (out Tuesday on Fat Possum). The album can be described as "an exhilarating amalgamation of frightening horn sections, unexpected 808s, ambient synth lines, schoolyard taunts, booming, primitive drum beats, heavy bass lines, piano, violin, accordion, ringing guitars, rave beats, and sinister acid jazz that captivates and mystifies." They are bringing that party to the stages of Lincoln Hall . Tickets are $16 pre-show and $18 at the door. The show is 21+. Lincoln Hall is located at 2424 North Lincoln Avenue.

A Lesson Before Dying @ Lincoln Square Theatre

It's opening night for A Lesson Before Dying at Lincoln Square Theatre (4754 N. Leavitt). Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gainesset, the play is set in Bayonne, Louisiana in 1948. Kristina Schramm directs. Shows Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm & 8pm through June 11. Tickets are $20, $12 for students and seniors. For reservations and info call (773) 275-7930 or visit Lincoln Square Theatre.

Disappears @ Empty Bottle

Over the last many months, Disappears has trended more toward the lighter side of Krautpunk. Their Live at Echo Canyon and Guider releases haven't had the same punch that most of their debut did (and their live shows have done without many of their early bangers like "Gone Completely" and "Marigold"), but they're still highly innovative with heavy Can influences permeating throughout their tunes. Disappears headlines the Empty Bottle. The Eternals and Wumme open at 10pm. The show's 21+ and $10. The Empty Bottle's at 1035 N. Western Ave. 773-276-3600.

Durutti Skool Poetry Workshop @ Outer Space Studio

The Next Objectivists are "a free school of poets and critics pursuing the techniques of writing poetry from outside the self" (think William Carlos Williams, not Ayn Rand). Tonight, their workshop will be held in conjunction with the Red Rover Reading Series as the Chicago Durutti Skool 2011, part of a nationwide series of workshops examining poetry as a catalyst for social change (yes, that means Marxism and anarchism). Outer Space Studio, 1474 N. Milwaukee Ave., 7-9pm.

Funk-a-Lot @ Subterranean

Funk-a-Lot, the First Friday event at Subterranean (2011 W. North Ave) welcomes guest DJ Gogo tonight alongside monthly residents Merk1 and Tim Zawada. The fellas will be spinning boogie, funk and soul in the Sub-T Lounge from 10p until 2a.
