NEDTalks: Spreading Worthless Ideas @ The Whistler

A spoof of the Silicon Valley TED Talks, the NED Talks return to The Whistler (2421 N. Milwaukee) with a panel of comedic speakers whose aims are "not to smarten you up but to dumb you down and present speeches, powerpoints, pie charts and shoebox dioramas on topics such as 'Protecting Your Brain from Hypnotism' and 'Why it's Better to be Beautiful'." Kellen Alexander and Seth Dodson co-host, and non-informative speakers include: iO improv comedian Sarah Fineout, featherproof publisher Zach Dodson (and brother of Seth), performer Andrew Payton, writer and filmmaker Daniel Kibblesmith, and a secret special actually smart guest expert! ManBQue hosts Cue for the Cure, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. For $25, enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner (veggie options available), PBR while it lasts and live acoustic performances from The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir's Elia Einhorn, Spitalfield's Mark Rose, Ballroom Boxer, Gunner's Daughter and Bob Palas, plus DJ Jaime Black. Fillet of Solo presents You Only Shoot The Ones You Love@ Lifeline Theatre

Come out to the Lifeline Theatre (6912 N. Glenwood Avenue) for this afternoon's performance of Jeffrey Sweet's chronicles of thirty years of dealings with Del Close, Paul Sills and the mad pioneers of Chicago Improv in You Only Shoot The Ones You Love. "The Music Never Ends": Celebrating the Life of Joe Vito @ Chicago Cultural Center

A group of some of Chicago's best jazz and cabaret musicians will honor the life of legendary Jazz pianist Joe Vito, who passed away last year, at the Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall (78 E. Washington) today at 2pm. Admission is free. The program will feature musings by musicians Jim Widlowski, Ken Haebich, Audrey Morris, Laury Shelley, Sean Harris, Frank Caruso, Frank Winkler, Frank D'Rone, Mark Madsen, Larry Novak, Bob Sutter, KT McCammond and Carole Loverde.

Ladies Rock Camp Showcase @ Schubas

Ladies Rock Camp, a weekend-long fundraiser for the ever popular Girls Rock! camps, culminates tonight as camp bands perform for each other, their families, and anyone else willing to listen, at Schubas (3159 N. Smart Readings @ Smart Museum

This afternoon from 1pm-3pm at the Smart Museum (5550 S. Greenwood Avenue), poet Matthias Regan will begin a series of two workshops combining the sensibilities of reading and looking. Intended to "explore the relationship between figures and genres of personhood," each (free!) workshop consists of a brief lecture, tour of exhibit "Go Figure," and a conversation about related stories and poems.

The first of the two workshops, "Bodies Among Other Things," pairs Kerry James Marshall's painting Slow Dance with a short story by detective novelist Walter Mosley.

The second workshop will be held on August 14th.
