Julie Hyzy Affairs of Steak Book Launch

What do the White House, cooking and mystery novels have in common? Author Julie Hyzy who has been releasing a series of mystery novels that involve the oval-office's chef. She will hold a release for her newest title in the seriesAffairs of Steak today at 1pm at Centuries and Sleuths bookstore 7419 W. Madison Street in Forest Park, IL. Refreshments will be served, some made from the recipes in her books.

CAKE Chicago @ Red Line Tap

CAKE Chicago presents a Prince-themed night of music at the Red Line Tap, 7006 N. Glenwood Ave., tonight at 9pm. The Locals, Ripley Caine & The Full Moon, The Barrettes and Venus in Furs play. Come dressed as your favorite "Prince" moment and you could win a prize. $5 at the door. 21+

Secret Colours @ Empty Bottle

One of Chicago's best running shoegaze bands, Secret Colours, have a new EP titled Faust that they'll be celebrating the release of at the Empty Bottle. Prepare for a lot of visuals happening on and behind them as they play. The harder Apteka and Rabble Rabble open at 10pm. It's 21+. The show's free with an RSVP and $8 without. Sketchfest

The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, aka Sketchfest, runs from Jan. 5 to Jan. 15 this year at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. At least a dozen shows run every night; see the schedule for tonight's performances. Tickets are $12-13 each, available online or through the box office at 773-327-5252.

Electric Elephant Holiday Party

Roth Mobot and other circuit benders will be at Lizard's Liquid Lounge, 3058 W. Irving Park Rd., from noon to 3pm today for an "electric elephant swap" -- think white elephant, but with random electronics and other geeky stuff -- and circuit bending symposium. To participate, bring an inexpensive wrapped item of that ilk and make sure to get a ticket; the swap starts at 1pm. Stick around for a "circuit bent open mic." Free, 21+.

Tipping and Class Warfare in the Early 20th Century @ Kendall College

Join professor Andrew Haley of the University of Southern Mississippi for a discussion of the history of server gratuities, and the tension it caused for middle-class Americans who wanted to be part of the restaurant culture but resented the higher class of service for those diners willing to pay a little extra. Event is at Kendall College, 900 North Branch, from 10am-noon. Free parking. Event is $3 for Kendall students, $5 for everyone else, and is sponsored by Chicago Foodways Roundtable; you must RSVP to attend.

GlitterGuts 4th Anniversary Party

Party photo site GlitterGuts celebrates its fourth anniversary at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., today starting at 3pm. The marathon lineup includes performances by DJ Gant-Man, B.B.U., Team Bayside High, Blacklight Saints, Ammunition, DJ Demchuk, Heaven Malone, Jams Dean, Johnny Walker, Molly Bass, Mother Hubbard, PHNM, Qbot, Show You Suck, Starfoxxx, 18andCounting and more, plus the Underground Dollar Store craft show until 8pm.
