Evening of inaugural performances @ Old Town School of Folk Music

The Old Town School of Folk Music presents an evening of three performances commissioned by the school to celebrate the opening of their new building at 4545 North Lincoln Avenue. Presented tonight will be: "Shuffling Through Snapshots" by Jennifer Guglielmi; Tom Stevens' "String Quartet Number Four"; and Anne-Marie Akin's "Call and Response: Voices from the Old Town School." The performances start at 7pm in Szold Hall in the new building; admission is $20, or $18 for school members. For reservations please call (773) 728-6000.

The March: A Civil Rights Opera Project @ South Shore Cultural Center

The South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr., hosts the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago's The March: A Civil Rights Opera Project, today at 4pm. Held in conjunction with the Chicago Park District and composed by Jonathan Stinson, the opera centers on the people and events surrounding the 1963 March on Washington, with characters including Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Slow Food Annual Meeting @ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

Come farmers, chefs, locavores and gardeners to Slow Food Chicago's annual meeting to discuss eggplant, pigs, basil and ducks for the coming growing season. You'll hear about this year's theme (and their newly defined mission), learn what sort of events and volunteer opportunities will be available and provide ideas for how we can make Chicago a more farmer-friendly city. Hosted at the Peggy Notebart Museum at 2pm. Free reservations required.
