Facets Cinemathequepresents its 10th session of Facets Night School screenings paired with lectures & discussions about the films. Tonight's film is Barbet Schroeder's 1987 film Barfly, based on the writings of Charles Bukowski. Discussion of the film will be led by Facets Night School regular Chris Damen. Facets Night School runs Saturday evenings through April 21; the lectures begin at midnight with a $5 fee. See the Facets Website for a complete schedule and to purchase tickets in advance. The third annual Chicago Zine Fest is on Saturday March 10th. The fest features over 150 zine exhibitors, a DIY Film Festival, an exhibitor Art show, Discussions and Workshops, and Kid's activities. The fest is from 11am - 6pm at Columbia College's Conaway Center 1104 S. Wabash Ave.
Between Friends, a nonprofit fighting against domestic violence, holds its annual Bubble Ball tonight at the River East Arts Center, 435 E. Illinois St., from 7pm to 11pm. Enjoy drinks and apps, dancing and a raffle. Tickets are $150 before Feb. 25, $175 after.
The Zhou B Art Center, 1029 W. 35th St., hosts the live filming and party for The House That Chicago Built, tonight from 5pm-2am. Directed by noted Chicago house music DJ Lil Louis, the film centers on the evolution of the music genre that was born in the Windy City but grew to become a global phenomenon. The event also includes the world's first mobile "House" museum, art exhibits, a live performance by legendary house music artist Marshall Jefferson and music by DJs including Justin Long and Michael Serafini. The Poetry Foundation welcomes playwright Beau O'Reilly and actor John Starrs in The Boho Dance, which imagines a conversation between Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg; comedy and entertainment ensues. The Poetry Foundation, 61 W. Superior, 7pm. Free. Advance tickets are spoken for; tickets at the door will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
Tonight is the final team competition in the Louder Than A Bomb teen poetry fest. The largest such festival in the world, it was founded in 2001 to bring teens together across racial, gang, and socioeconomic lines through self-expression and community. The Vic, 3145 N. Sheffield, 6 pm. $20, $10 students. Sold out; first come, first serve tickets will be made available.
The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., throws its annual SXSW Send Off Party with the Reader today. Starting at 1:30pm, the lineup includes Kids These Days, In Tall Buildings, Musikanto, Hollywood Holt, The Waco Brothers, Outer Minds, Cains & Abels, Redgrave, Unicycle Loves You, Football and Paper Thick Walls. Permanent Records co-hosts a pair of sendoff shows with Captcha Records, Moniker Records, Rotted Tooth Recordings, and Trouble In Mind Records tonight and tomorrow at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N.
