The Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., hosts a screening of Chicago's Only Castle, a documentary about the Givins' Irish Castle in Beverly Hills-Morgan Park, at 1:30pm today, as part of its Project Sunday film series. A Q&A with filmmaker Errol Magidson follows the film. The screening is free with museum admission.
Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis will bring his blend of chopped up rock/electronic infused hip hop to Schubas, along with the frantically fast Busdriver, who is opening up for him on his current tour. Astronautalis is just one of the many rappers to come out of the flourishing Minneapolis scene, and his live show is known for his impressive freestyles based on audience suggestion. Busdriver mashes up intellectual touchstones with pop culture, all while delivery his verses at a dizzying speed. A solid night of hip hop. Get tickets here.
The South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade rolls down Western Avenue from 103rd Street to 115th Street today, starting at 11am. Free.
The Poetry Foundation welcomes playwright Beau O'Reilly and actor John Starrs in The Boho Dance, which imagines a conversation between Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg; comedy and entertainment ensues. Permanent Records co-hosts a pair of sendoff shows with Captcha Records, Moniker Records, Rotted Tooth Recordings, and Trouble In Mind Records Saturday and tonight at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave. Apache Dropout, Heavy Times, Zath and Supersonic Piss perform tonight at 9pm. Tickets are $8 or $15 for a two-day pass. 21+
The American Blues Theater (ABT) takes part in SHINSAI: Theaters for Japan, a worldwide benefit for theatres in Japan affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, today at 3pm at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave. ABT will perform seven commissioned works at the event. Tickets are $10, with proceeds going to SHINSAI. More info here.
