Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival @ Logan Square

The annual Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival kicks off three days of music, art, theater, dance and food in Logan Square. Events start this afternoon at 4pm and run all weekend on Milwaukee Ave. between California and Kimball.

Square Roots Festival

The Old Town School of Folk Music and Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce present Square Roots, a new festival of music and craft beer, running Friday through Sunday, July 20-22, on Lincoln Avenue from Montrose to Wilson. Watch a variety of music genres live on multiple stages, sample craft beers from regional brewers, and enjoy food from local restaurants. Suggested donation $10, $5 for seniors and children under 12. The festival is open from 5pm to 10pm today. See the site for tonight's music lineup.

Printer's Ball

The eighth annual Printer's Ball is tonight at Columbia College's Ludington Building, 1104 S. Wabash Ave., from 6pm to 11pm. Join hundreds of literature lovers in a celebration of the printed (and electronic) word. The theme this year is "Time Warp!" Pick up free publications, watch a commencement speech by Max Headroom, and check out workshops, demonstrations and performances all night. Pre-register for a free commemorative poster. Free.

Cinemapocalypse @ Music Box

The Music Box Theatre presents Cinemapocalypse, a selection of films curated by the programmers for Austin's famed Alamo Draft House. The films screen tonight and tomorrow night, and the program will include a selection of trailers from the collection of the Draft House, and an appearance by film-maker Gary Sherman, who will be presenting a screening of his film Vice Squad tonight at 9pm. And if that wasn't enough, there's a special midnight screening tomorrow evening that's a special surprise! The Silent Film Society of Chicago Presents: Sherlock Holmes

The 2012 Silent Summer Film Festival kicks off tonight with a screening of the 1922 film Sherlock Holmes starring John Barrymore and directed by Albert Parker. Film starts at 8pm. Live organ accompaniment by Jay Warren and pre-show music at 7:30pm with Charles Cameron's Great Lakes Trio. Tickets are $7.50 in advance, $12 at the door. The Portage Theater is located at 4050 N. Schadenfreude @ Gallery Cabaret

A stripped down Schadenfreude -- just Justin Kaufmann and Kate James -- perform tonight at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley Ave. Doors at 9pm, and as always, there's free food. $10 cover. 21+
