Evanston Writer's Workshop Conference @ Orrington Hotel
This weekend is the third annual Evanston Writer's Workshop Conference. Billed as the Midwest's only multi-genre writer's conference, it features workshops on topics such a memoir writing, publishing tips, writing a synopsis and finding the time to write. Featured speakers cover a range of genres including nonfiction, romance, thriller, science fiction/fantasy, horror and graphic novels. The Silent Film Society of Chicago Presents: Our Dancing Daughters
The 2012 Silent Summer Film Festival wraps up tonight with a screening of the 1928 film Our Dancing Daughters, starring Joan Crawford, directed by Henry Beaumont. Live photoplay accompaniment by Jay Warren on the organ, and pre-show music at 7:30pm with the Rajiv Halim Sextet and jazz vocalist Linda Collins. Film starts at 8pm. Gotye @ Charter One Pavilion

Sam Moore @ City Winery
Sam Moore's career may have peaked with Sam & Dave in the 1960s, but the soul/gospel singer has also had a fine solo career. Stone-cold hits like "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "Soul Man", as well as dozens of others during his days on the Stax label, cemented his legendary status in soul and R&B. Sam Moore plays at City Winery with East of Edens Soul Express DJs. The show's at 8PM. Tickets are $85 for VIP, $55 for Premier and $45 for Reserved. City Winery's at Randolph & Racine.
