Logan Launch Festival

The Logan Launch Festival, celebrating the opening of UofC's Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, runs Oct. 12-14 at the center, 915 East 60th St. Programming includes musical performances, art exhibits, workshops and lectures; see the event website for a full schedule. The festival runs from noon to 5pm today. Free.

Women in Boxes @ Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., screens Women in Boxes, a documentary film about magician's assistants, today at 1:30pm. Free with museum admission or membership.

Bucktown Apple Pie Contest @ Holstein Park

Today's Apple Pie Contest at Holstein Park (2200 N Oakley, 2-5pm) will teleport you back to olden days--live music, games and fun for the kids, and a massive apple pie contest; you can enter your pie ($25 fee), or stick around after the judging to buy individual slices of all the competition.

Food: Returning to Our Roots @ MCA

Sandra Holl of Floriole is among the panelists at this talk on how to escape food innovations and still eat well, which goes down at the Neeson Theater in the MCA (220 E Chicago) tonight from 4:30-6pm. Talk is part of Chicago Ideas Week; admission $15.
