Indie in the Windy City

Indie in the Windy City Handcrafted Market takes up roost in the The Chelsea Hotel, 920 W. Wilson Ave., today from noon to 5pm. Shop art and crafts from more than 30 vendors. The show benefits Cornerstone Community Outreach. Admission is free.

Halloween Havoc 5 @ Portage Theater

The Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., hosts Halloween Havoc 5, a five-day horror film festival Oct. 28-Nov. 1. Starting at 6:30pm today, watch Nightmare on Elm Street and The Howling. A vintage toy and collectible fair will be in the lobby. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for kids.

Chicago Way Reading Series Book Release for Jamie Freveletti's Dead Asleep

Tuesday October 30, The Chicago Way reading series as they host local author Jamie Freveletti's book release of Dead Asleep. Freveletti is a trial attorney by day and author of thriller novels by night. This release will not simply have Freveletti will read from and sign her novel, but she w be interviewed onstage by The Chicago Tribune's Social Media Manager Amy Guth. Stop by the Hidden Shamrock, 2723 N. Halsted at 6p to celebrate this event.

South/Southwest Side Community Budget Hearing

Members of the Progressive Caucus of City Council hold a community hearing on the 2013 municipal budget tonight at 6pm at South Shore International High School, 1955 E. 75th St. Cliff Kelley, political commentator for WVON-AM, will moderate, and several alderman will be in attendance. Larry Bennett @ Gleacher Center

The Chicago by the Book reading series brings together the authors of great reads about the city with an adoring audience (this means you, my friend). Discussion is moderated by author and NU prof Bill Savage; book signing to follow. Tonight's author is Larry Bennett (The Third City). Event runs 6:30-8pm at the UC Gleacher Center, 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive; admission $10.

RedEye Roast @ Laugh Factory

The RedEye is turning 10, and it's celebrating with a roast tonight at the Laugh Factory, 3175 N. Broadway. Watch local improv actors, comedians and maybe a few celebrities say to RedEye staffers' faces what you've been saying for years. Tickets are $10, plus two-drink minimum. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm. 21+

Father John Misty @ Lincoln Hall

Josh Tillman has worn many hats this past decade, and his latest project as Father John Misty has seen plenty of acclaim on the back of this year's Fear Fun.
