2013 CHIRP Record Fair

CHIRP Radio's 11th Annual Record Fair & Other Delights returns to The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union, 1340 W. Washington Blvd., for the fifth consecutive year. The fair runs Saturday, April 13 from 10am to 7pm. Admission is $7, or $5 with an ad or flyer, with a special $25 pre-opening session from 8 to 10am. Tickets available here.

Chicago Critics Film Festival

The first annual Chicago Critics Film Festival runs April 12-14 at the Muvico Rosemont 18, 9701 Bryn Mawr Ave. in Rosemont. Today's screenings begin at 11am; see the schedule below. Films are $12 each; single-day tickets for Saturday and Sunday are $50 or $80 for both, and full-festival passes are $100. Get tickets here.

International Tom Hanks Day

Celebrate the day of Hanks--not that rapscallion NU student Chet Haze, but his far more affable, talented dad Tom--at two side-by-side bars (Uncle Fatty's, 2833 N. Sheffield, and Headquarters Beercade, 950 W. Wolfram) today starting at noon. Drinks, raffles, movies starring Tom played on heavy rotation, and more drinks await you. The event is also a benefit for one of Hanks' favorite charities, Lifeline Energy, which provides solar-powered media players and radios for people in developing countries. Admission $5.

Handmade Market

The Handmade Market returns to the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., today from noon to 4pm. Browse the handiwork of more than two dozen local artisans while enjoying the Bottle's ambiance and perhaps a beer. Free, 21+ except for children accompanying an adult.

The Book That Was to Come @ Cultural Center

The Poetry Center of Chicago presents "The Book That Was to Come," a poetry reading, in the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., today at 1pm. Readers will include Doro Boehme, Amaranth Borsuk, Kate Durbin, Lindsey French, Ian Hatcher, and Krissy Wilson. The event was curated by Judd Morrissey. Admission is free.

Draw Like Darger @ Intuit

Learn to draw like outsider artist Henry Darger at a workshop led by artist Joel Javier at the Intuit Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, 756 N. Milwaukee Ave., today at 3pm. The cost is $8 for members, $10 for non-members; materials and light refreshments will be provided.

'The Way We Sleep' Reading @ The Book Cellar

Tonight, The Book Cellar (4736 N. Lincoln Ave.) presents a reading of recently published anthology The Way We Sleep: a collection of short stories, comics, and interviews all based around the ways in which our sleeping and waking lives collide. The reading will feature contributors Billy Lombardo, Ben Tanzer, Dakota Sexton, and Natalie Edwards, as well as a shadow puppet show presented by Jill Summers and Susie Kirkwood. Chicago Golden Gloves Championships

The Chicago Golden Gloves championship bouts run April 11-13 at the Cicero Stadium,
1909 S. Laramie Ave. in Cicero. Bouts begin at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20-50 per night.

Facets Night School: Night of A Thousand Cats

Facets Cinematheque presents Facets Night School,a cult film paired with a discussion of the film, tonight at midnight. Tonight's film is a "Mexploitation" title from 1972, Night of A Thousand Cats, paired with a lecture by Facets Night School regular Dominick Mayer.
