You Do The Math @ the Laugh Factory

You Do The Math is a stand-up comedy show benefitting Math At No Cost, a non-for-profit organization working with students in at risk areas of Chicago to improve their math scores. The line-up adds-up to a great night of comedy with japes and jests from; Dr. Brian King, Emily Lake, Jonah Jurkens, Amy Sumpter, Andy Fleming, David Philips, Kat Rybarski, Rich Wentz, and Ryan Walker. Tickets are $20-$30 and can be purchased online, the Laugh Factory is located at 3175 N Broadway.

Author and past GB contributor Edward McClelland reads from and signs his latest book, Nothin' But Blue Skies: The Heyday, Hard Times, and Hopes of America's Industrial Heartland tonight at the Barnes & Noble DePaul University, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., tonight at 6pm.

John Waters @ Harris Theater

1,001 Afternoons in Chicago @ Architectural Artifacts

Chicago journalist Ben Hecht, who wrote for the Chicago Daily News, kept a daily column that was considered by his editor to be: "journalism extraordinary; journalism that invaded the realm of literature." Access Contemporary Music and Strawdog Theater have taken 64 of these columns and created a theatrical piece for voices and music. Featuring music soaked in the Jazz and Tin Pan Alley traditions by Seth Boustead and Amos Gillespie performed live by ACM's resident ensemble Palomar, 1,001 Afternoons in Chicago is a celebration of Hecht's monumental achievement. Takes place tonight at 7pm at Architectural Artifacts (4325 N. Ravenswood.) Tickets are $20, $12 online, $8 students and seniors. For more info visit ACMusic.org

Art is the Word @ Peanut Gallery

The Peanut Gallery, 1000 N. California Ave, hosts Art is the Word, a blending of writing and visual art. Artists and writers often switch hats, influence one another, and belong to the same cultural dialogues. Three workshops -- May 14, tonight and May 28 -- on the topic of text incorporation in the visual arts will take place followed by an exhibition displaying collaborative works that evolve out of the workshops, will run from 7 to 10pm. Participants will have a choice to collaborate with others in any way they please. The creation of collaborative work based on the workshops is encouraged, and works produced from the workshops will be included in an upcoming exhibition.

Solo in the 2nd City: Spring Fever @ Beauty Bar

Solo in the 2nd City features stories of single, dating, sex, and the like in our fine city. Event begins at 7:30 PM with music by DJ Continental and readings begin at 8:00 PM. Featured readers include Nico Lang, Shantell Jamison, Joel Kim Booster, Rachel L.C., and Jill Neumann. Jasmine Davila appears as a guest host. The event is produced by Solo in the 2nd City bloggers, Melinda McIntire and Carly Oishi. Event is free and charitable donations will be collected for the Chicago Women's Health Center. Event is 21+ at Beauty Bar Chicago, 1444 W. Chicago Avenue.

The Pungent Parlour Reading Series- #4

The monthly live lit series returns for it's fourth theme unspecific event. The show has a welcoming atmosphere with no pretension, where readers verbalize diverse tales that range from funny-because-it's-true fictional pieces, heartbreaking tragic proses, and poingant zines sprinkled throughout the hour-long storytelling night. The Pungent Parlour takes place every third Tuesday of the month in the back room of the Black Rock Pub (3614 N. Damen), 8:30 pm, and admission is free.
