Hunger Walk @ Soldier Field

The Greater Chicago Food Depository's 28th annual Hunger Walk 5k steps off today at 8:30am at Soldier Field; check-in opens at 7am. Registration is free, though a donation of $20 is suggested; register online or at the event.

Socialism 2013 Conference

Socialism 2013 runs this weekend, June 27-30, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel & Conference Center - Chicago O'Hare. The four day conference includes dozens of scheduled discussion sessions on topics such as economics, education, human rights, civil rights, and labor. Speakers include the likes of Jeremy Scahill, Glenn Greenwald, Jesse Sharkey, and many more. Details and a complete schedule of sessions available at the Socialism 2013 website.

28th Ward Bike Ride

To celebrate the new protected bike lane on Jackson and Lake St., Alderman Jason Ervin will lead a leisurely bike ride around the 28th ward this Saturday, on the protected lane. Following the ride, organized by Chicago's Active Transportation Alliance, there will be bike games, basic bike repairs, free food, and free raffles of a bike and helmet. The free ride meets at Jackson and Central Park, and goes from 10am- 12pm.

Let's Get Canned: A Homey History of Preserving @ Kendall College

Author and canning expert Sherry Brooks Vinton talks about the roots (no pun intended) and evolution of canning today at Kendall College, 900 N. Branch, from 10-noon. Admission $3-5; event sponsored by Culinary Historians of Chicago.

Randolph Street Market

The Randolph Street Market returns today and Sunday to the Plumbers Hall, 1340 W. Washington St., from 10am to 5pm. Shop antiques, vintage clothing, records, jewelry and fancy foods. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door; $3 in advance/$5 at the door for students. Kids 12 and under are free.

Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival

The Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival runs this weekend, June 28-30, on Milwaukee Avenue between Kedzie and Diversey. The festival features live music on two stages, more than 50 artist booths, food from neighborhood restaurants, family activities and more. The festival runs from noon to 10pm tonight; $5 suggested donation.

80s Double Feature @ Film Center

The Chicago Dyke March steps off at 3pm from Margate Park, 4921 N. Marine Dr., and travels through the Argyle Street area before returning to the park for a rally from 4 to 6pm. Free.

Feed Chicago Artists @ Starving Artist 2013

Art and food combine tonight at the Chicago Artists Coalition's annual benefit, Starving Artist 2013. Chefs from Fat Rice, Siena Tavern, Longman and Eagle, and Belly Q join some of Chicago's leading visual artists to create edible installations. Tickets are $50 for artists/arts administrators and $100 for general admission until June 15. All proceeds support CAC's programs and the Maker Grant, which provides critical unrestricted support for a local Chicago artist. If anything, go for the Taco Battle between Big Star and Antique Taco.

"Vivian Maier's South Side"

The Jane Addams Hull House Museum, 800 S. Halsted St., presents Vivian Maier's South Side, an exhibition of the recently discovered street photographer's depictions of Maxwell Street and the South Side, curated by Mike Bullis, tonight at 7pm. Bullis, filmmaker Tom Palazzolo and UIC photography professor Silvia Malagrino will screen a short film of Maxwell Street shot by Maier, and discuss her work and legacy. Free. Michael Penkas @ Tamale Hut Cafe

Tonight at 7pm, the Tamale Hut Cafe (8300 W. Cermak Rd. in North Riverside) Reading Series presents Michael Penkas. A mainstay at local readings such as Bad Grammar Theater and the Gumbo Fiction Salon, Penkas is the web editor for online fantasy magazine Black Gate. His story collection Dead Boys came out this past May. BYOB, open mic.

R&B Soul Jam @ Arie Crown Theater

Spektral Quartet: Sampler Pack @ Hideout

Tonight, hear new works by Alex Temple, Francisco Castillo Trigueros, Stephen Gorbos, and Lee Hyla. Don't know them? LATE Ride

The 25th annual LATE Ride overnight bicycle tour leaves tonight at 1am from Buckingham Fountain, 500 S. Columbus Dr. in Grant Park. Registration is $48 before June 28, $50 after. Packet pickup and on-site registration opens at 10:30pm, and a contest for "best lit bike" and "best decorated helmet" is at 11:45pm.
