BlogHer Conference

Blogger network BlogHer brings its annual conference back to Chicago this year, July 25-27, at the McCormick Convention Center, 2301 S. Lake Shore Dr., and the Sheraton Chicago, 301 E. North Water St. Attend panels and talks by bloggers, technologists and celebrities, check out the exhibition floor, and party after hours at a variety of events. See the full schedule here [PDF]. Newberry Book Fair

The 29th annual Newberry Book Fair runs July 25-28 at the Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St. Browse through more than 120,000 used books for sale, most under $2. The fair is open from noon to 8pm today. Admission is free.

Cal Schenkel @ Firecat Projects

Firecat Projects, 2124 N. Damen Ave., hosts an opening reception for an exhibition of art by Cal Schenkel tonight from 7 to 10pm. Schenkel is best known for his cover art for Frank Zappa and Reprise Records, as well as his iconic cover for Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. He will be present for the reception. The show will be up through Aug. 20.

Laughs for Lawrence @ Lincoln Lodge

Keith Henry Lawrence, comedian Candy Lawrence's father, has stage four lung cancer and faces more than $300,000 in medical bills. Candy's put together a benefit comedy showcase at the Lincoln Lodge, 4008 N. Lincoln Ave., tonight, featuring Colleen Doyle & Dana Quercioli, Matteo Lane, Adam Burke, Natalie Jose, Bobby Minelli, Megan Gailey, Ted Tremper, Puterbaugh Sisters and Sean Flannery. There will also be live music and a raffle. Tickets are $10 online or at the door; $25 for VIP seating. Doors open at 8pm.

Psych/Garage Night @ Multi-Kulti

Fuzz-Daddy Records presents an evening of psych and garage rock at Multi-Kulti, 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave., tonight at 8pm. The lineup includes Marmora, Bike Cops, The Go Down, Viper Fever, The Snake Oil Salesmen, the Shine Brothers, Our Glass and Jessica Gorse. Details on Facebook.

CAT Film Festival @ Chicago Filmmakers

Chicago Filmmakers and South Side Projections present the CAT Film Festival, devoted to films featuring felines. The same program of 14 films will be shown tonight at Chicago Filmmakers, 5243 N. Clark St., in the parking lot behind the building (enter on Farragut), and on Saturday at Cafe 53, 1369 E. 53rd St. Tonight's screening begins at 8pm. Tickets are $8. You may want to bring a folding chair.

Shit Show @ The Shambles

The Shit Show standup comedy showcase says goodbye to cohost Ever Mainard before she moves to LA with a "total liquidation" show tonight at 8:30pm at the Shambles, 2050 W. Division St. Guests this month include Ryan Walker, Danny Kallas, Liza Treger, Brian Henning, Charlie Rohrer, Rasa Gierstikas, Keith Paeseland of course Ever Mainard. Plus free shots of Fireball cinnamon whiskey. Free, 21+

Teenage Bottlerocket @ Beat Kitchen

Teenage Bottlerocket rose from the ashes of Homeless Wonders and the Lillingtons, two underrated punk bands from the 1990s. The band's sound is in line with the addictive pop-punk that those bands had in spades. Teenage Bottlerocket headlines Beat Kitchen, 2100 W. Belmont Ave., with the Reaganomics and Sore Subjects opening. The show's 17+, $12 in advance, $15 at the door and starts at 10pm.
