Blogger network BlogHer brings its annual conference back to Chicago this year, July 25-27, at the McCormick Convention Center, 2301 S. Lake Shore Dr., and the Sheraton Chicago, 301 E. The 29th annual Newberry Book Fair runs July 25-28 at the Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St. Browse through more than 120,000 used books for sale, most under $2. The fair is open from noon to 8pm today. Admission is free.
Anne Mallek, curator of the Gamble House, will speak on "Good Houses and Good Books": The English Arts and Crafts Movement in America, at 6pm at the Pritzker Auditorium in the Monroe Building, 104 S. Michigan Ave. Admission is free; registration is required. The Gamble House in Pasadena, CA is considered an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts architecture. The lecture will explore how the work of British Arts and Crafts designers such as William Morris and Charles Robert Ashbee influenced American design.
On Thursday, July 25, 2013, Acts of Love will kick off its 2nd "Love Young People" Tour distributing books and bookbags to young people in need. Beginning at 6:30pm at Hamilton Park located 513 W. 72nd St. (72nd & Stewart Ave.), Acts of Love, along with local officials, volunteers from across the city, and Englewood residents will walk the streets giving out book donations. Volunteers will give away 1,000(+) books, distribute book bags filled with new books, encourage local residents to build a reading room in their homes, and ask adults in Englewood to take the Acts of Love Pledge to love young people in their homes and on their block. Volunteers should report to Hamilton Play Park at 6:30pm and bring a bookbag or tote. For more information, visit the Acts of Love site.
Mac & Cheese Productions hosts The MANual: An Experiential Toolbelt for the Everyday Guy tonight at Catalyst Ranch, 656 W. Randolph St., from 7 to 9pm. The event features TED-like six-minute talks by local experts on a variety of topics, all geared towards guys and enhancing their lives. Food and drink will be provided. Registration is free.
Head to Reggie's, 2105 S. State St., tonight for three classic punk albums performed live onstage. The Roaring 22s play Rocket to Russia by the Ramones, Bdum Bdum perform Singles Going Steady by the Buzzcocks, and Coffee Shop Punks play The Record by Fear. Doors are at 8pm. Tickets are $7. 21+
The Hideout hosts an appearance by Mark Mulcahy, formerly of Miracle Legion and Polaris (a band name that "Pete & Pete" fans know all too well). Opening act is Healing Power.
