African Festival of the Arts

The 24th annual African Festival of the Arts runs Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 in Washington Park, 51st and Cottage Grove, from 10am to 10pm each day. Browse a marketplace with more than 300 artists and vendors; sample food from local restaurants; visit pavilions organized around topics such as books, spirituality and cyberspace; and enjoy music on two stages. Admission is $20 per day at the gate, or $30 for a weekend festival pass. Children under 12 and seniors over 65 are $5. Family passes are $30 per day, and include admission for two adults and up to four children.

Jazz Fest

The Chicago Jazz Festival runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph St. Watch jazz on four stages beginning at 2:30pm today. Free.

North Coast Music Festival

The 4th annual North Coast Music Festival kicks off in Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., for a full weekend of diverse musical performances. Passion Pit, The Disco Biscuits and Mac Miller headline. Gates open at 2pm, music starts at 3:30pm. Friday general admission tickets are $55. All ages.

National Toasted Marshmallow Day @ Geja's

Geja's Cafe, 340 W. Armitage Ave., celebrates National Toasted Marshmallow Day tonight with a campfire marshmallow roast on the patio from 5 to 10pm, with local Girl Scouts on hand to demonstrate proper s'mores construction. A donation of $5 for adults and $2 for children is requested; proceeds benefit the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Call 773-281-9101 for more info and reservations.

Before Midnight @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center kicks off a week-long screening of Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy with a screening of Before Midnight tonight at 6pm. A complete schedule of screenings and advance tickets are available at the Film Center website. Film Center: 164 N. State St. 312-846-2800.

Chicago Fringe Festival

The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8 at several venues in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. More than a dozen performances of theater, sketch comedy, spoken word and other experimental works stage tonight, beginning at 7pm; see the schedule for details. Admission buttons are $5 (they're required to get into any show); tickets are $10 per show. You can also buy five- and 10-ticket packs for $45 or $80, respectively, or go to everything for $180.

Uncalled-for Reading Series @ Uncharted Books

Uncalled-for Readings Chicago will return for a one-off version of the "mostly queer, mostly prose" former series tonight at Uncharted Books (2630 N. Milwaukee) at 7pm. Megan Milks hosts a lineup including Vicky Lim, Tim Jones-Yelvington, Jillian Soto, and Jackie Wang. Free.

Shit Show @ The Shambles

The Shit Show returns to the Shambles, 2050 W. Division St., at 8pm tonight, featuring Stephanie Hasz, Shane Copland, Matty Ryan, Chad Briggs, Seth Davis, Drew Anderson and Ayala, Rasa Gierstikas and Keith Paesel. Hosted by Gierstikas, with special guest host Lisa Laureta. The Hot Dog Man (Paesel) will be on hand as always, doling out shots of sponsor Fireball Whiskey. No cover, 21+

Electric Sheep @ Den Theatre

Replicants meet Archandroids in this musical mash-up the 1982 science-fiction epic Bladerunner with R&B maestro Janelle Monae's 2010 album, which runs Aug. 29-31 at The Den Theatre, 1333 N. Milwaukee Ave. Bar opens at 10pm, show begins at 10:30. Tickets are $15 and available online.
