Signs of Life, a musical drama based on the true story of the Czech ghetto, Terezin, has come to Chicago for a limited run at Victory Gardens Theater (2433 N. Lincoln.) Universally acclaimed by the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader, and the New York Times, Signs of Life runs through October 27 with performances on Wednesdays at 2pm and 7:30pm, Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 5pm and 8:30pm, and Sundays at 3pm. A Month Of is a monthly open-mic storytelling series where the audience selects the event's theme online before the show starts. Open mic slots are 5-7 minutes long, all story types and forms are welcome. The show is every second Wednesday at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., and runs from 7:30 to 10pm. The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents a screening of 1941's Mr. Bug Goes to Town, the final animated film from Fleischer Studios, tonight at 7:30pm at the Patio Theater, 6008 W. Irving Park Rd. Before the show, there will be a hands-on display of live insects from scientist Jim Louderman and interactive exhibits from the Harris Learning Collection at the Field Museum. Admission is $5.
Solo in the 2nd City brings together writers, comedians, and performers to explore what it is to be single, dating, and sexy in Chicago. This month's edition will be Wednesday, October 9th at 8pm. The stories are told within the glitter walls of Beauty Bar, at 1444 W. Chicago Avenue. Event is free and 21+. This month features veteran storytellers Don Hall, Janna Sobel, Judi Goshen, JH Palmer, and Note Sangern. Hosts are Carly Oishi and Melinda McIntire. Donations will be collected to benefit Chicago Women's Health Center.
CHIRP Radio presents The First Time reading series tonight at 8pm at Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. Seven presenters read true stories of a significant "first time" -- this time the theme is "First Scare" -- and the First Time Band then performs a cover of a song related to that story. Readers include comedian Adam Burke, DJ Scary Lady Sarah, writer Shannon Cason, storyteller Ellen Lekostaj, musician Steve Frisbie, CHIRP DJ Helean Lea, and more. Tickets are $10 online or at the door. 21+
