The St. Lucia Festival of Lights kicks off at 4:45pm tonight with a candle-lit procession beginning at the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark St. After a tour of Andersonville, the event moves inside the museum, with a telling of the Lucia legend, family entertainment by Dream Big Performing Arts, and Swedish holiday treats. Admission is $1 or a can of food or new, unwrapped toy donation for Care for Real, Edgewater's food pantry.
On the second Friday of every month, the 30-or-so galleries and creative spaces in the Chicago Arts District at Halsted and 18th streets open their doors to showcase art and artists from Chicago and the world. The opening receptions begin at 6pm and last officially until 10pm, letting viewers get up close with the art and artists for free. Maps are available at the information center at 1821 S. Halsted St.
The Music Box Theatre presents the 2013 documentary The Punk Singer, a look at the career of singer Kathleen Hanna. The film opens tonight and runs through next week; see the Music Box Website for a complete schedule. Music Box: 3733 North Southport. (773) 871-6604.
Shame That Tune returns to the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., tonight at 6:30pm. Hosted by Abraham Levitan and Brian Costello, three contestants spin a wheel of topics, Costello interviews them and Levitan composes a quick song based on their responses. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. 21+
The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. celebrates its 30th annual holiday special starting today, and running through December 24. The show consists of a double-feature of two holiday classics: It's A Wonderful Life and White Christmas. Along with the films you get sing-along Christmas carols and a visit from Santa Claus. Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., hosts Warm, Safe & Sound, a benefit show for the homeless, tonight at 8pm. The lineup features The Locals, The Bright White, Ace Reporter, Hard Kiss and Young Distractions. Tickets are $15 or $10 with the donation of a clean coat or sweater at the door. CIMMFest presents Filmage: The Story of the Descendents/ALL tonight at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave. The 8pm showing is sold out, but a second one at 10:30pm has been added. A Q&A with co-director/co-writer Deedle LaCour, editor/producer James Rayburn and producer Caryn Capotosto follows each screening. Tickets are $10. 18+
