The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St., celebrates the centennial of Carl Sandberg's poem Chicago with an event today from 5 to 7pm. Enjoy cake from the Swedish Bakery and free beer from Haymarket Pub & Brewery, as well as readings, musical performances, and talks and discussions by poets Erica Bernheim, Robert Polito and Marc Smith; reporters Alison Cuddy and Kari Lydersen; musician and librarian Marten Stromberg; and professor and writer Bill Savage. Volunteer chefs serve up soup tonight from 5:30-8pm at the Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia) at this weekly benefit for food pantries/hunger relief organizations in the area (a different one is selected each week). Show up, eat, and donate what you can. Free.
The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents Crime Without Passion, a 1934 film co-written and -directed by Ben Hecht after he headed off to Hollywood, tonight at 7:30pm at Patio Theater, 6008 W. Irving Park Rd. Admission is $5.
