Today, April 13th, marks the 75th birthday of the Hyde Park Art Center. The art center, located at, 5020 S. Cornell Avenue will be hosting an event from 1:00pm to 5:00pm where visitors can mingle with the artists, explore The Beast and listen to experimental music by New Material.
Speed Rack, a cocktail competition for female bartenders, returns to Chicago at Joe's Bar, 940 W. Weed St., from 3 to 7pm today. Tickets are $20; all proceeds go to breast cancer research, education and prevention. 21+
The ninth annual Black Playwrights Festival runs April 8-13 at the Black Ensemble Theatre, 4450 N. Clark St. Each night showcases a different playwright; today's closing show features "The Shorties," five 10-minute plays, at 3pm. Tickets are $15 per night, or $50 for a festival pass. The Chicago Latino Film Festival runs April 4-17. Films primarily screen at the AMC River East 21, 322 E. Illinois St., as well as the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St.; see the full schedule for showtimes and locations.
Serving the Sentence, a reading series in which the first sentence of each story is the same, this month features the sentence, "I wasn't sure if it was an itch or a rash." Hear what Amanda Rountree, Kendra Stevens, Will Petty, Rachel Cromidas, Tori Szekeres and Debbi Welch do with it at Towbar, 1500 W. Jarvis Ave., at 7pm. Free, 21+.
The live lit series That's All She Wrote is back at The Savoy, 1408 N. Milwaukee Ave. This month's lineup features Emmy Bean, Megan Stielstra, Ira Murfin, Tess Lennon-Dorn and Dwight Wilson. Hosted as always by JH Palmer and Angela Benander. Stories begin at 8pm, make a dinner reservation to guarantee a seat. This is a free event.
