Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave, will be hosting three fantastic local bands: Cartridge B-Sides, Aggro Control, and Bluster. This great collection of indie/punk/rock music will be a perfect and fitting end for Mother's Day. Tickets are $7, Doors at 8pm.
Dose Market returns for a new season at 1st Ward in the Chop Shop, 2033 W. North Ave. Shop for handmade fashion and accessories and artisanal foods from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

The University of Chicago presents Let's Get Working: Chicago Celebrates Studs Terkel, a festival of the city's legendary storyteller, May 9-11 at the Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th St., and other locations. Attend workshops, panel discussions and a variety of other events each day; see the schedule for details. Attendance is free.
The Chicago Critics Film Festival returns for its second year at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., May 9-15. Tonight's schedule is below. Tickets are $12-15 per screening, or $75 for a weekday pass, $100 for a weekend pass or $150 for a full festival pass.

The Hideout hosts a "live performance/broadcast" of an episode of "Studs' Place," the TV show from the 1950s starring Studs Terkel. The performance will be done by Pocket Guide To Hell. Serving the Sentence returns to Towbar, 1500 W. Jarvis Ave., tonight at 7pm. This month, Dana Norris, Julie Marchiano, Kim Morris, Carma Nibarger and Maggie Jenkins read stories that all start with the sentence: "Yeah, I'm sure ... I think." Kendra Stevens hosts. No cover; donations will be collected for DetermiNation Illinois - American Cancer Society.
The live lit series That's All She Wrote is back at The Savoy, 1408 N. Milwaukee Ave. This month's lineup features: GPA, Carey Friedman, Suzy Krueckeberg, and Luke Babb. Hosted as always by JH Palmer and Angela Benander. Stories begin at 8pm, make a dinner reservation to guarantee a seat. This is a free event.
Ice Balloons (featuring Kyp Malone), the best noise punk band fronted by a human fly, return to Chicago. They will be playing at Beat Kitchen, 2100 W. Belmont Ave., and will be joined by New Orleans' swamp punk rockers Babes and local noise band Melkbelly. Doors open at 8, tickets are $7.
