The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., hosts the Chicago French Film Festival July 31-Aug. 5. Tonight's screenings include School of Babel at 5:30pm; Jealousy at 7:30pm; and Me, Myself and Mums at 9:20pm. Tickets are $12 per film, or get a festival pass to five films for $45. (Alliance Français members get $2 off individual tickets.)
The Reader's Mick Dumke and Ben Joravsky host First Tuesdays with Mick & Ben tonight at 6:30pm at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave. Guests this month the topic is education, with guests Lauren FitzPatrick of the Sun-Times, Sarah Karp of Catalyst and Linda Lutton of WBEZ. Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door.
Tuesday Funk, the eclectic monthly reading series sponsored by Gapers Block, returns to the upstairs bar at Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark St. tonight with guests Hannah Gamble, David Daskal, Christine Simokaitis, Britt Julious and Leah Thomas. Eden Robins and Gapers Block editor Andrew Huff co-host. Doors open at 7pm (no earlier; we're serious), and the reading begins at 7:30pm. Free, but you must be 21.
Two Cookie Minimum kicks off its fourth year tonight at 9pm at Hungry Brain, 2319 W. Belmont Ave. This month's lineup features writer Franki Jo Beckwith, sketch comedy performer Tom Simmons, indie comic artist Ian McDuffie, writer John Wilmes, and zinester Josh Piotrowski (aka GAS MASK HORSE). John Wawrzaszek hosts. No cover, and there will of course be cookies. 21+
