The Second City That Never Sleeps @ Second City e.t.c.

This 24-hour marathon of some of the biggest names in music and/or comedy, which begins at 6pm tonight at Second City's e.t.c. Theater (1616 N. Wells), is a benefit for Letters to Santa, a nonprofit organization that helps local families in need. The $20 ticket price gets you in-and-out privileges (if some of you have to go to, say, work), but the whole event will be streaming online. Among some of the names scheduled to appear are Kim Deal (Pixies), J.C. Brooks & The Uptown Sound with Ian Rubbish (aka Portlandia's Fred Armisen), Robbie Fulks, Steve Albini, Jeff Tweedy, Orange is the New Black's Natasha Lyonne, and James McCartney (his dad is kind of famous). Local improvisers appear throughout the night as well.

Hoop Dreams @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., presents a special screenings of the 1994 Kartemquin film Hoop Dreams tonight at 6:30pm. The filmmakers will be in attendance: Steve James, Peter Gilbert, Gordon Quinn, Adam Singer, and film subject Arthur Agee will participate in a discussion of the film. Write Club's War on Christmas @ Hideout

Write Club's annual War on Christmas show takes the stage at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., tonight at 7pm. Host Ian Belknap pits writers against each other on opposing topics, with the audience determining the victor. This month, David Isaacson represents "give" while Susan Karp takes "receive," Dave Stinton is "naughty" while Emily Rose is "nice," and Samantha Irby champions "Santa" while Ian Belknap promotes "Jesus." Tickets are $20. 21+

Shop Lula Launch @ Lula Cafe

In celebration of the launch of shoplulacafe.com, the newly-launched site that sells the crafts, art, music, and literature of Lula Café's staff, Lula Café (2537 N Kedzie Avenue) hosts a bazaar-inspired event tonight from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. The event features the site's artists such as Ogechi Anyanwu as well as neighborhood shops such as Eskell, Fleur, and Tusk.
