Sen. Claire McCaskill @ City Club

The City Club of Chicago welcomes Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill for a breakfast talk at Maggiano's Banquets, 111 W. Grand Ave., at 7:30am. The Senator will talk about her life and rise to the US Senate, based on her book Plenty Ladylike. Tickets are $35 for members, $45 for non-members.

Cold Waves IV @ Metro

Cold Waves, an industrial music festival that raises money for suicide prevention nonprofit Hope for the Day, is at the Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., tonight and Saturday. Tonight's lineup includes Two from the Eye, Lab Report, Prurient, Author+Punisher, Lead Into Gold, Lustmord and headliners Godflesh. Single day passes are $46, two-day passes are $85; get tickets here. Doors open at 5pm, show's at 6pm. 18+

The View From Here Reading@ City Lit Books

City Lit Books (2523 N. Kedzie) is hosting a party for the latest release from The Chicago Center for Literature and Photography (CCLaP). Their second annual "student all-star" anthology: The View From Here, Stories From Chicago Neighborhoods, features student writing from all over the city. Doors open at 6pm, readings begin at 6:30. There will be refreshments, readings by contributing writers, and the book will be available for purchase. This is a free event.

In Search of the Black Knight @ Black Cinema House

The Black Cinema House, 7200 S. Kimbark Ave., hosts a screening of In Search of the Black Knight, a documentary about the difficulty single black professional women have finding an eligible black men, tonight at 7pm. Film scholar Sergio Mims introduces the film and leads a discussion afterward. Doors open at 6:30pm. Admission is free, but RSVP is requested.

Howard Kremer @ Schubas

Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., hosts an appearance by Howard Kremer of the Who Charted? podcast. Show starts at 7:00pm, and ticket are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. UPDATE: This show is sold out.

Wavves @ the Vic

Californian surf punk group Wavves hits the Vic, 3145 N. Sheffield, tonight with Twin Peaks opening. Tickets are $20 for this all-you-can-listen garage punk extravaganza.

Noah Gundersen @ Thalia Hall

Wanna cry from some really heartfelt folk songs? You'll probably have a lump in your throat if you go to see Noah Gundersen, unless you have no soul. Thalia Hall, 1807 S. Allport Ave., is a gorgeous venue for this type of music, too. Ivan and Alyosha will open the show, which starts at 8:00 pm (doors at 7:00). You can buy general admission tickets for $17 or balcony seats for $27, both available here.
