From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden
The complexity of the artistic process is the concept at the forefront of From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden. The extensive collection of collages, lithographs, etchings, and prints is made up of 75 works by Bearden, spanning 30 years of his life. Bearden is best known for his collages, and the experimental methods he applies to them. Many of his collages are repeated with different colors, applications, and titles- accentuating the importance of these changes.
Behind the variation in process lies rich concepts and stories in Bearden's work. Having spent his childhood amidst the Harlem Renaissance of New York City, his work reflects the vibrant culture of that time, with jazz infused energy. Train Whistle Blues II, a collaged photoprojection from 1965, depicts a variety of characters including a young man smoking and playing guitar and a concerned mother, looking on from the background. Several other pieces are collaged into this scene, and the complexity of both process and story makes for a rich and engaging experience.
From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden runs through June 27 in the Sydney R. Yates Gallery of the Chicago Cultural Center.
