International Antiques Fair @ Merchandise Mart
The entry fee for this year's International Antiques Fair at the Merchandise Mart is $15, but considering the objects for perusal (and for sale if you've got several thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket) it's worth the entry fee. I've never in my life stood so close to an original Marc Chagall lithograph, not even at a museum. Dinan & Chighine (Booth 7084) has it priced at $3,800, but I think I'll just remember what it was like to stand inches away from it. Also for sale at the Dinan & Chighine booth are original Henri Matisse lithographs at $1,650 each, and a set of 4 Karl Brodtuman lithographs at $9,600 for the set.
Slightly more affordable are some Shirley Jackson paintings at Crescent Worth Art & Antiques (Booth 6072); at $750 each they're a relative bargain.
The Chicago Center for the Print Poster (Booth 7066) is a perennial favorite of mine; their pieces include fruit crate labels that start at a reasonable $25, and their world-class collection of posters run into the thousands, including a Knie Circus poster that I would give my left eye for.
In keeping with the theme of museum quality objects, Philip Chasen Antiques (Booth 7054) has an impressive collection of Louis Icart pieces starting at $5,500, and Stern Pissaro Gallery (Booth 3096) is selling works from the entire Pissaro family, including an oil painting by Ludovic-Rodo Pissaro for $15,000. If you end up at the Stern Pisarro Gallery, try to get the blonde woman staffing the booth to laugh; when something tickles her funny bone, there are no holds barred.
The International Antiques Fair runs through Sunday at the Merchandise Mart, for more information visit Merchandise Mart Antiques.
