The Pump and Dump Show, a Night Out for Beleaguered Moms

gbpumpdump-2.jpg
Billed as a parental night out for beleaguered moms, The Pump and Dump: A Parentally Incorrect Comedy Show comes to Chicago's Mayne Stage next month. Musician/comedian Shayna Ferm and her coach "MC Doula" (Tracey Tee) have presented two years of sold-out monthly shows in Denver.

They're now taking the show on the road to Northern California and Cleveland as well as Chicago this fall. Their album, #BREEDER, featuring songs written and performed by Shayna Ferm, is now on iTunes; and in 2014 Ferm and Tee launched a second website, TheMomToMomProject.com.

Ferm is a graduate of the theater school at DePaul University. She went to New York with a Goodman Theatre play, became a comedian and later moved to Denver with her family.

The show is "a raucous evening of comedy, inappropriate music, games, prizes, drinking, swearing and parental commiseration," including songs like "Eat Your F-ing Food" and "When I Die, I Want to Come Back as a Dad." Audience participation includes playing "Never Have I Ever" and sharing the "Most F-ed Up Thing Your Kid Did This Week."

The Pump and Dump will be presented at 7:30pm Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Mayne Stage, 1330 W. Morse Ave. Doors are at 6pm. Tickets (18 and over) are $23-$28 and can be purchasedonline.

From Chicago to Senegal by Way of the Drum: Interview with Local Filmmaker Mallory Sohmer

By Ana Sekler

Mallory Sohmer is a freelance documentary filmmaker from Chicago and a Columbia College alumna. She co-directed the new film, Drum Beat Journey, the story of four inner-city youth who travel to Petit Mbao, Senegal, to participate in a drumming workshop. The program used music as a vehicle to capture and connect with the young men in an engaging and original way. But this is not just a film about drumming; it's about stepping into another culture to learn about oneself.
