Cory has four girlfriends. While each woman knows her relationship with Cory is not exclusive, none of them (well, maybe Bethany) knows that Cory is committed to four extremely different women. And when he's with them, he doesn't think about the other ones. And while he doesn't think it's optimal for him or them, it is what it is.

This has been going on for almost a year. He's been with Bethany the longest, about 14 months. It's been 11 with Gaia. Seven with Katie. And with Bentley (yes, her real name), about three. He counted on her to come up with some scheme that made her spend half the year in Alaska fishing for salmon, or building a float for a Catholic high school girls' lacrosse team. She'd had this old Vanagon since high school and it was always breaking down. Cory figured that if he still wanted to see where life took Gaia, he'd better help her out.

Bentley came from money. And although she never, ever talked about it or showed it, Bentley's lack of job and surfeit of Whole Foods bags gave her away.
