I recently got Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library for Valentines, and I can easily say it's among my favorite gifts I've ever received. I've always appreciated Ware's work visually, but I had never actually read any of his graphics. There is a slight learning curve, but once you connect with his story-telling tendencies, it amount of emotion revealed in the content is sometimes overwhelming. No graphic novel has had me laughing this hard and feeling so heartbroken. I couldn't put it down once I started.
So I would highly recommend this book, as it served as a great primer for me, being someone who had never read Ware's work. I think the short story snippets (most are only a page long) give a great understanding of the world he has created on paper.
I'm not too familiar with the other people's work you mention, but I'll be looking them up for sure.
Yes, Ware's books are visually beautiful. We have several of his books in my library, and every time we get a new one, I can't stop myself from flipping though them and just admiring them.
As a graduate student in sociology at the University of Chicago, author Sudhir Venkatesh gained entrance into one of Chicago's largest street gangs. Gang Leader for a Day tells the story of the inner workings of the gang and the extraordinary friendship he developed with one of the gang's leaders.
Join us at The Book Cellar at 4736-38 N. Lincoln Ave. (map) to discuss the book. We'll meet on Monday, April 12, at 7:30pm. New members are always welcome!

One of the things we were thinking about is reading a graphic novel this summer, but which one? Something by Jessica Abel? Chris Ware? Daniel Clowes? Jeffrey Brown? Someone else?
