What book have you been recommending lately?
The Year of Magical Thinking - Joan Didion. Read it in two days, even though I should have been working on my finals.
Lamb - Christopher Moore. Hilarious and profound, a rare combination.
Seven Types of Ambuiguity - Elliot Perlman. Didn't like the ending, but the book is wonderfully written so I can still recommend it in decent faith.
Of all the books I've read this year, none have stayed with me so much as 'Atonement' and 'The Glass Castle.'
Hmm, I'm thinking about re-reading the Dark Materials books. I read them a few years ago, and my memory is a little sketchy on the details now. But they were good.
I've also been hearing good things about Christopher Moore. Might have to check that out, too.
I've been reading some good books lately, but nothing that I've absolutely *loved*. It's starting to get me down.
I would recommend Lost Horizon by
James Hilton. This book takes you to
a place you'd never expect to go,
and makes you question how you might
react in that same situation. (which
leads to even more questions!)
And I agree with Val, The Stand is
a great recommendation.
I love reading these suggestions!
One of the best books ever is Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett. Just finished reading two more by Patchett -- The Magician's Assistant and The Patron Saint of Liars -- the latter still haunts me. Now reading Gone Baby Gone by Dennis Lehane: What a rush!
The two books I most recently recommended were:
Germinal, by Emile Zola
Burn Collector (compilation of 1-9), by Al Burian
I am currently attempting to methodically make my way through Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, but one of my all time favorites is his first book, The Broom of the System.
Oh man, Infinite Jest. I couldn't read another book for 3 months after finishing that one. It took a long time to get that story out of my head. Bits of it still haunt me even 5 years later.
