Well Read: A Solo Exhibition from Tracie Ching
Why not judge a book by its cover, just this once?
D.C.-based artist Tracie Ching's new exhibition, "Well Read" at Chicago's Galerie F, asks visitors to do just that.
Ching's work explores the different filters that the film industry imposes on literary classics in the process of adaptation and promotion. Undoubtably, for example, the advertising campaign for Baz Luhrman's "Great Gatsby" included broad strokes of 1920's-era pastiche; similarly Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" has been advertised with Old Testament associations. However, both campaigns operated with little fidelity to the source material; pains were made to produce material that read as "roaring twenties" and "biblical", in lowercase and with quotation marks.
Ching's solo exhibition features representations of her own that try to adhere to each literary classic's respective story and time period. Ching's work underlines the problem of repurposing these classic works for mass consumption - aesthetic, thematic and plot changes abound.
Ching, a self-taught graphic designer working in Washington D.C., joined the design team for VC Ultimate, the premier ultimate frisbee apparel company, in 2011 and became its Lead Designer and Creative Director in 2012.
She has also produced licensed posters for Star Trek: The Next Generation, :Deep Space Nine, AMC's The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, and Community. She's best known for her limited edition silk screen prints of alternative movie posters.
"Well Read: A Solo Exhibition from Tracie Ching" held its opening reception March 28th. The exhibition will run from March 28th to April 11th, 2014.
A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to Reading is Fundamental, the largest children's literacy nonprofit in the United States.
