Indie Comics Represent on Free Comic Book Day
Free Comic Book Day is celebrated this Saturday, May 3. For a chance to see some local talent represented during this year's free comic book day, here are a few events showcasing Chicago's rich community of independent comics artists.
Start the afternoon with a workshop, Make a Minicomic Challenge at Chicago Publishers Resource Center, 858 N. Ashland Ave., at noon. The workshop will be led by Chicago comics artist Neil Brideau, who is also an organizer of the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE).
Participants will work together to create a collaborative mini comic in under two hours. Join in the process of creating the story, characters, and plot. Then the group will write and draw the comic. All attendees will get a copy of the finished comic to commemorate the experience. This is great for all-ages and all skill-levels. A small donation will be asked at the door.
Then at 7pm, drop by Quimby's Bookstore, 1854 W. North Ave., to continue the fun. Quimby's welcomes Chicago-based cartoonist collective Trubble Club in an event to support CAKE.
Trubble Club will draw your true inner self by modifying the Quimby's photo booth into a pop-up studio. Hang out with some of Chicago's best comics artists as they collaboratively reveal your inner self by interpreting psychic signals from their magical photo booth. CAKE will provide snacks and refreshments. Plus there will free comic books available while supplies last. The event is free and open to the public.
Keep supporting indie comics by attending this year's Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE), a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, May 31 & June 1 at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted St.
