Raise a Glass, RUI Turns Nine this Wednesday

Reading Under the Influence celebrates its 9 year anniversary this Wednesday May 7 at Sheffield's, 3258 N. Sheffield Ave., at 7pm. Each month for almost a decade this reading, held in the back room at Sheffield's bar, will welcome a live reading unlike any other in the city.

They will turn off the flat screen televisions playing the game (don't worry, there's no Hawks game on the 7th). The bartender will serve up a few more drinks, the special being $2 domestic bottles. Then one of the hosts will begin with an introduction and rules. There will be two rounds of readers. Each will take a shot of their choice prior to reading. Trivia questions will be asked by the reader, but you must wait until the entire question is read before you can answer.

The series is one of Chicago's longest running lit events and probably one of the most notable. The idea behind the series was born in 2005 by a group of students from Columbia College's Fiction Writing department. They loved to write, drink, be social and to share others' work. Some of the founding hosts include Amy Guth, General Manager of the Red Eye; Julia Borcherts and Rob Duffer, both freelance writers and teachers at Columbia College; and Jesse Jordan, author of Gospel Hallow. Now a new group of friends, who like their predecessors met in the Columbia College writing program, man the helm: Naomi Huffman (Literary Editor at Newcity), Bronwyn Mead, Frankie Migacz, Jon Natzke, Erin Nederbo, and Benham Riahi.

This Wednesday night will showcase the series past and present. Reading will be RUI legends Julia Borcherts, Jesse Jordan, and Amanda "Mandy" Snyder. Joining will be the new batch (yes that was a Gremlin's joke), including RUI hosts Naomi Huffman, Bronwyn Mead, Frankie Migacz, Jon Natzke, and Benham Riahi.

To celebrate their anniversary, the night's theme will be "Nine." All eight readers will read original work followed by trivia questions related to that theme. The audience can shout out answers, the loudest and quickest responses heard are eligible to win book and drink prizes.

There is a $3 cover, leaving enough change to grab a drink and settle in for the night's entertainment. Raise your glasses and toast RUI. Here's to another successful year.
