May 2 is a Big Day for Book Lovers
This Saturday, May 2, might be overwhelming to some bookworms. That's because there are two big, day-spanning events that you won't want to miss.
First, Chicago Independent Bookstore Day takes a page from Record Store Day and rounds up special events at a dozen indie bookstores around the city. There will be author readings, free food, raffles and giveaways, discounts on purchases and more. In addition, each store will have pages from a limited edition short story by Stuart Dybek and illustrated by Dmitry Samarov -- visit each shop to collect the whole thing.
The participating bookstores are:
• 57th Street Books, 1301 E. 57th St.
• The Book Cellar, 4736 N. Lincoln Ave.
• City Lit Books, 2523 N. Kedzie Blvd.
• Open Books River North, 213 W. Institute Pl.
• Open Books Pilsen, 905 W. 19th St.
• Powell's Bookstore, 1218 S. Halsted St.
• Roscoe Books, 2142 W. Roscoe St.
• Sandmeyer's Bookstore, 714 S. Dearborn St.
• Seminary Co-op Bookstore, 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave.
• Unabridged Bookstore, 3251 N. Broadway St.
• Uncharted Books, 2620 N. Milwaukee Ave.
• Women and Children First, 5233 N. Clark St.
While that's all going on, the Society of Midland Authors will be celebrating its 100th birthday with a full day of readings and panel discussions at University Center, 525 S. State St. The event begins at 10am with opening remarks followed by Jim Schwab reading poetry by Vachel Lindsay, and ends with a panel discussion featuring novelists Christine Sneed (Little Known Facts), Carol Anshaw (Aquamarine) and Rosellen Brown (Before and After) from 4 to 5pm. Nearly two dozen authors will read or participate in discussions in between, and many will sign copies of their books. The whole program is free and open to the public; see the society's website for a detailed schedule.
