Detour

I started this project while commuting daily via subway. I began photographing the city, but instead of disregarding the graffiti, dust, or rain on the windows, I chose to focus on these imperfections. I sought out these signs and patterns and used them to transform the windows into lyrical cityscapes.

Sarah Hadley's photographs have been exhibited in Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C, and Los Angeles. Her work has received several grants, including a finalist grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a CAAP grant and a Curator's Choice Award at Around the Coyote. As a photojournalist, her photographs have appeared in Chicago Magazine, Marie Claire, ReadyMade magazine, Citysearch.com and many other national and international publications. She has taught photography at the Marwen Foundation, Gallery 37, and assistant-taught at the International Center for Photography in New York. In 2004, she started Damen Studio (www.damenstudio.com), a small gallery on Chicago's north side. You can see more of her work at www.sarahhadley.com.
