Friday Foodie Round-up

The Chicago Burger Project is a blog "in which we ([GB staffer] Nat and Adam) will eat at every one of Chicago's Top 55 burger spots as recommended by Time Out Chicago and write about our experiences with each one."

• Gourmand, the popular Printers Row cafe, abruptly closed its doors and papered its windows sometime very recently. Anyone know the back-story? [via]

Charlie Trotter demonstrates the new TurboChef oven by roasting a rack of lamb -- in six minutes. For about $6,000, you can too.[via]

• And speaking of Charlie Trotter, he's celebrating the 20th anniversary of his eponymous restaurant with an evening in his studio kitchen, including a "stream-of-conscious talk" and a five course tasting menu based off his latest cookbook, Spa Cuisine. It's $150 a person, through the Latin School. [via]

• Hungry Mag on the history of the carrot.

• In addition to our own flickr foodporn group, you might be interested in joining the Chicago Cuisine group. Or possibly the Chicago Hot Dog Pride group, if you're so inclined (or obsessed).

• This is a couple years old, but certainly worth mentioning: A conversation about food and foodporn with author Neil Gaiman, which mentions Katsu on Peterson as a place he mentioned on his site (and praises even now). He continues to get feedback from people saying they ate there on his recommendation and loved it.

All I can say is that I wasn't the only person standing outside wondering where it was and folks said it had been open on Sunday. We were there/not there on Tuesday.

I had quite a shock when I showed up this morning and Gourmand was closed. What happened? This is a huge loss for the neighborhood.

I heard it is closed for some remodeling. The Thai place up the street did the same thing a month ago. Maybe they will finally fix the $%*# front door?

Mitchell / March 27, 2007 11:53 AM

I spoke with an employee at Gourmand on Monday, March 19, when I was at Gourmand that day.

From what I was told, Gourmand closed up on March 20, and will be closed for about three weeks, but they expect to reopen on or before April 14.

That may have since changed. Can anyone else get any confirming details?

Andrew / March 27, 2007 12:03 PM

Mitchell, that's certainly possible, although there aren't any signs on the papered-over storefront. Not to say it's not possible they're remodeling, but usually a business will mention that fact, rather than give the impression it's closed forever.

I work for Filter (same owners) and can confirm that Gourmand is remodeling. 3 weeks sounds right.
