No Habla Español? No Problema!

Many know that Logan Square has, in the recent past, been a heavily Hispanic neighborhood. Tacos, burritos, and enchiladas can be found on every other block. But what about arepas? Pupusas? Jibaritos? Looking to educate and expand cultural horizons, Multilingual Chicago is hosting the Logan Square Latino Culinary Tour this Saturday, September 25, at 11am. On the tour not only will you get to sample these items and more, you'll also get a brief Spanish lesson so you can properly pronounce and order them in their native language.

Multilingual Chicago was started by Dr. Jill Bishop and offers classes in Spanish, French, Italian, Hebrew, Polish, Mandarin Chinese, and Arabic. Specialized classes can also be requested, for example there is a Hindi class for children this fall. The classes are small, but private tutoring is also available, as well as an intensive "Bilingual Boot Camp".

Bishop is an anthropologist by trade, so connecting culture with language was a logical step for the business. Since Multicultural Chicago opened last fall, they have hosted wine tastings featuring both French and Spanish wines, and paired up with Real Tenochtitlán to host a Mexican cooking class. Bishop plans to continue culinary tours, possibly featuring Indian and Chinese food with accompanying language primers beforehand.

The tour this Saturday is $45, and covers the language lesson, food, and transportation (mini bus!) from the starting point at Multilingual Chicago to all restaurants. At press time, the following restaurants are participating and featuring the following dishes:

Buen Aroma (Ecuadorian): fish stew
El Guanaco (Salvadorian): pupusas w/ cheese, chicharron & loroco
Sabor Latino (Puerto Rican): vegetarian & meat jibaritos
Gloria's Café (Colombian): arepas w/ corn and cheese; spinach & chicken empanadas
Conoce mi Panama (Panamanian): yuca fritters & chicken tamales
Cafe con Leche (Cuban): coffee & pastries

There will be a vegetarian option at all stops. Sign up for the tour online.

The State of Food Writing

By Brandy Gonsoulin

In 2009, food blogging, social media and Yelp were gaining popularity, and America's revered gastronomic magazine Gourmet shuttered after 68 years in business. Former Cook's Illustrated editor-in-chief Chris Kimball followed with an editorial, stating that "The shuttering of Gourmet reminds...
