Satisfactory Meal at Woodie's Flat

dsc_3059.jpgThere are certain Christmases in which the presents are slightly mediocre, the dinner ham is a bit salty, and the tree is haphazardly decorated with ornaments you purchased on sale last year. That's how I felt about the Super Bowl this year.

And unfortunately, that contributed to my general disappointment at Woodie's Flat. This Old Town joint serves typical bar food--burgers, wings, tacos, and the like, but I found the lack of non-burger/sandwich entrees somewhat dissatisfying. A roasted chicken plate or flatbread option would certainly spruce up the menu. Their appetizer special--soggies (jack, cheddar, and herb parmesan cheese in hoagie bun with warm jus)--also tasted like a wet pizza.

rsz_dsc_3060.jpg Nonetheless, I truly enjoyed their fries and burgers--grilled perfectly and served at optimal temperature. Woodie's also has a funnel cake ice cream sandwich that I will eventually try, when it's not -2 degrees outside. The beer selection and service were also highly impeccable.

The three-tiered restaurant is vertically-designed, with narrow walkways and stairwells reminiscent of tiny British pubs. As a frequenter of crowded sport bars, I typically enjoy intimate settings, as I'm not overly claustrophobic or germaphobic. But with rabid football fans shouting at the flatscreen TVs, even I felt cramped. Although dining at Woodie's didn't live up my expectations, one meh experience doesn't mean I'm permanently crossing it on my list. The bar just recently opened, and I'm certain any kinks will eventually smooth out.
