The Book of Love--Peter Gabriel
Head Over Feet--Alanis Morisette
Such Great Heights - Iron And Wine (if that's the one about freckles lining up, if not--then the one about freckles.)
Crazy Love-Van Morrison
Harvest Moon-Neil Young
Hard to put just one.
This is Not a Love Song - Public Image Ltd.
Scary Kisses - Voice of the Beehive
Lovesong - The Cure
Silly Love Songs - Paul McCartney
As the first guy to chime in (and looking over my shoulder to make sure none of my ball-breaking co-workers see this), I have always secretly liked "If You Leave" by OMD...
Always makes me think about my next greatlove...
"Have a Little Faith in Me" by John Hiatt. The only downside to having a swing band play our wedding reception is that it prevented this from being our "first dance" song.
The boy and I walked down the aisle to "Book of Love" by the Magnetic Fields. I fucking love that song.
This is Hardcore by Pulp. It's about lust really, not love.
Faithfully by Journey.
Bed of Roses Bon F'ing Jovi
Walk the same line- Everything but the Girl
Everything Al Green.
I second Faithfully by Journey.
There are so many great ones, but right now, it's In My Lady's House by Iron and Wine.
Oh, and Against All Odds by Phil Collins.
Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
It's totally cheesey, but I think "The Idea of Growing Old" by the Features is probably the best love song I've ever heard. The chorus? "You turn me on to the idea of growing old."
"Heroes" by David Bowie is the ultimate love song.
"Valentine's Day" by Bruce Springsteen is a close second
but I can't resist:
"In Spite of Ourselves", by John Prine and Iris Dement
"We're Not the Jetset (We're the Old Chevrolet Set)" by George Jones and Tammy Wynette
"Stay" by John Legend is my current favorite. It's just so simple and perfect.
Another vote for the Magnetic Fields' "The Book of Love", though I don't think I'll be able to walk down the aisle to it.
"Wowie Zowie" by Zappa and the Mothers. A send-up and tribute to '50s love songs, and surprisingly sweet.
"Wowie Zowie, baby / You're so neat / I don't even care / If you shave your legs"
Not just my favorite love song, but my favorite song period: "Woman," by John Lennon. Second in both categories: "In My Life," by the Beatles.
Sara by Bob Dylan
and
A Minor Incident by Badly Drawn Boy
"My Heart's Reflection" by Yo La Tengo
"Le Vie En Rose" the Louis Armstrong version.
and
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" again by Louis Armstrong and the most appropriate love song for any Chicagoian.
"the Whole of the law" by yo la tengo
"Sing a song for you" by tim buckley
"Dress sexy at my funeral" smog
"eight days a week" by da beatles
it goes on.
Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks
Why, Tesla's "Love Song," of course.
Sad thing is, I'm only half kidding. When it comes to love songs, good associations can sometimes count as much as good songwriting.
Ultimately 'Pictures of You' by the Cure is right there at the top, although it was recently tainted just a bit by it's use in an HP commercial.
"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" by the Casinos
"Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath.
it's "there is a light that never goes out" by the smiths.
"If a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side, well, the pleasure and the privilege is mine."
Very good. Maudlin, but good.
Washing of the Water - Peter Gabriel
With or Without You - U2
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus
"Ring of Fire" Johnny Cash
"Good Feeling," by Violent Femmes
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
You Send Me - Sam Cooke
"Ruben and Cherise" - Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter
"Mint Car" - the Cure
"Your Love" - Tegan & Sara
"Question" - Old 97's
"Aaron & Maria" - AmAnSet
"tendency right foot forward" by Kleenex Girl Wonder
"Without You" - Harry Nilsson
"Sex Dwarf" by Soft Cell
Nothing Better by Postal Service, only because I'm going through a breakup and feel like being a weepy maudlin puss.
Shadow of a Doubt: Sonic Youth
I Want You Around: Ramones
I Don't Want to Hurt You: Frank Black
"Jones Crusher" - Frank Zappa
'Tears are Cool' by Teenage Fanclub and 'Far Far Away' by Wilco.
Long-time listener, first-time caller:
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
I want to be with You - Al Green
Silver Spring - Fleetwood Mac
Sticking with the Zappa theme:
"Broken Hearts are for Assholes"
Hee hee.
Along with everyone else, I was totally going to pick "The Book of Love" by the Magnetic Fields!
So I'll go with "Octopussy" by the Wedding Present (since I can't nominate the entire "Seamonsters" album)
I also adore "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service (nicely covered by Iron and Wine.)
The Ship Song - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Or maybe Prison Sex by Tool.
"Love Me Like A Reptile" - Motörhead
'fresh feeling' by the eels...
I think I've given that song to 10 people who always seem to love it more when they're in love...(you/don't have a clue/what it's like to be next to you..)
As my love life is a disaster right now I recommend anything from The Afghan Whigs or The Magic Numbers (AW = mean, mean love songs MN = california sounding songs of broken heart)
My favorite loves songs were the first and last songs at our wedding:
The Chain - Poi Dog Pondering
Ringfinger - NIN
I second "The Whole of the Law" by Yo La Tengo!
I thought, nah, no one will know that one - so thanks to Mark for putting it out there.
Magnetic Fields " It's only time"
I've been to a bunch of weddings lately, so these are both timely and timeless.
My own love life tends more towards "Ego tripping at the Gates of Hell" by the Flaming Lips, or " The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades" by Sufjan Stevens. Not as scary as they sound, actually.
"Going to California" by Led Zeppelin
not completely a love song....more of a longing song. Still pretty.
"I only have eyes for you" by the Flamingos
Beautiful
"To Love somebody" by the Bee Gees....Corgan's version ain't too bad either
"Don't worry baby" by the Beach Boys
I don't count this as a favorite per se, but "Not Fire, Not Ice" by Ben Harper deeply affects me in a way no other song does.
"Such Great Heights"--not the Postal Service version, but the Iron and Wine cover, which may be found in the Garden State soundtrack. Beautiful.
"Wonderful! Wonderful!" by Johnny Mathis. I have a soft spot for the classic vocalists.
"I Could Write a Book"--maybe the Harry Connick, Jr. version.
"Colour My World" by Chicago. It could be considered cheesy, but I'm a sucker for its simplicity.
"Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell. Very bittersweet.
"Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.
"Love Is in the Air" as sung by John Paul Young, off the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack. Really just makes you feel good.
"I fought the law, and the law won"
"True Love Ways" - Buddy Holly (really)
"Heat of the Moment" - Asia (cheese)
Maybe, for sheer novelty, "Nantucket Selighride" by the Phaantom Surfers.
I've Just Seen A Face, P.S. I Love You, Do You Wanna Know A Secret, Two of Us and Long, Long, Long - the Beatles ( I heart the Beatles)
Everything I Do - Bryan Adams (guilty pleasure)
"i'll be your mirror" - the velvet underground and nico is my all time favorite. but right now: "the first day of my life" - bright eyes. the video is a tear jerker, but i'm a sap and i admit it.
grant lee buffalo - "honey don't think"
dusty springfield (and others) - "the look of love"
the cat power cover of "sea of love"
squeeze - "take me, i'm yours"
elvis - "can't help falling in love"
the beatles - "eight days a week"
mary chapin carpenter - "come on come on"
and so many others i can't think of at the moment.
I've just seen a face I can't forget the time or place where we just met, she's just girl for me and I want all the world to see we've met...li di di di dum di...
That song always makes me happy. I, too, ♥ the Beatles.
I'll be yr bird by M. Ward
Not to be picky, but "The Whole of the Law" (great song, that) is actually by The Only Ones, though covered nicely by Yo La Tengo.
"Lucky" Ben Folds
"Destiny" Zero 7
"Come Pick Me Up" Ryan Adams
"Peach Trees" Rufus Wainwright
Wild Horses

Sticking with the Zappa theme:

The Luckiest by Ben Folds
also:
Chosen Family by Leona Naess
I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Into My Arms
also Closing Time by Leonard Cohen
Hold On by Tom Waits
No Need to Cry by Neko Case
the way you look tonight - Frank Sinatra
come on now folks- stevie wonder: I Believe.
Are we allowed to make fun of other people's choices?
The best love song ever recorded is Etta James' "At Last". There's a reason they've played it at every damn wedding I've ever been to (including my own).
Today, I love "Sway" as sung by Michael Buble. Makes my knees weak.
Somebody by Depeche Mode. The hubby & I are weird like this.
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She'll hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
Dr. Awesome, I think you may have jumped the gun -- favorite hate songs is next.
i second the violent femmes 'good feeling.'
also gang of four's 'damaged goods.'
By Your Side - Sade
"Listen, The Snow Is Falling" by Galaxie 500
"We're Going To Be Friends" by The White Stripes.
I forgot my wedding song... which is still beautiful though my marriage is over...
Matthew Sweet "I've Been Waiting"
also for Beatles love songs, "In My Life" which was my father-daughter dance.
"Touched a Dream" by R. Kelly
"I wanna be adored" - Stone Roses
Ravel's Bolero???
Fine. If no one else has the guts to cop to it, I will:
"In Your Eyes," Peter Gabriel.
And don't tell me half of you didn't think of this song, at least for a second. ;)
stevie wonder -- i believe
otis redding -- these arms of mine
otis redding -- i've been loving you too long
these all just slay.
and i'll always have a soft spot for christian death's 'we fall like love.'
INDIA ARIE : THE TRUTH
it has a the most beautiful lyrics my girl friend sung me it
Maybe I'm Amazed by Wings
I Found a Reason by Velvet Underground, covered by Cat Power. Breaks my heart.

Also, "Now and Always," "This Years Love," and "Be Mine" by David Gray.
"With Or Without You" U2
"When you're gone" Avril Lavigne
"Warning Sign" Coldplay
"Fix You" Coldplay
