In other words, what do you have in terms of MP3s vs. CDs vs. tapes vs. vinyl?

I've got about 700 CDs, around 150 records (LPs and 45s), a couple dozen tapes (mostly mixtapes from highschool and college) -- and 33GB worth of MP3s, which comes to about 6,800 songs.

I have all my music in some kind of digital format, which is about 12 gigs worth. Out of that, I have the bands I'm a big fan of on CD, and keep those 60 some cds in good condition, and besides that I have a few contemporary records from bands that still release them- stuff like Bright Eyes and the Black Keys.

currently have about 38 gigs of music, "digitally". but i have probably around 700 cds that dont see the light of day very often. i havent ripped all of my cds, and probably never will as my musical taste has changed vastly since junior high.

printdude / September 22, 2008 9:30 AM

I've got about 1700 Cds, 250-300 tapes, 400 Albums, 800 45's, and 40G of tunes.

I still listen to my CDs daily, I'm deep in the process of ripping all that vinyl. It takes a while, but the payback is huge; I get things on my iPod that most folk have either forgotten about or never heard.

i have 2300 CD's, 1100 LP's, 100's of 45's/7inches. and currently 200GB of music.

Seth Anderson / September 22, 2008 11:48 AM

I have about 900 LPs (only some of which are available digitally); over 11,000 CDs, about 60 mix tapes that I made many years ago (and also haven't yet converted to digital); and slightly over 260 GB of MP3 files in iTunes.
I wish I had more time to listen to everything, but am not complaining.

Gaigen / September 22, 2008 2:37 PM

About 350 albums (many more loaned out and never returned over the years, etc.), 50 CDs (but countless more lost, broken or scratched beyond listenability over the years), and about 2,000 MP3s. I gotta get me one o'them vinyl-to-digital converter turntable thingies...

Julianna / September 22, 2008 3:17 PM

I've got about 8 gigs of music on the laptop, and about 100 cds that have yet to be ripped into it, because I am supremely lazy. No vinyl, because I am also terribly uncool.

Steven / September 22, 2008 8:46 PM

About 70% English, 20% French, 8% German, and under 1% Japanese, under 1% Arabic and under 1% other languages. Yeah, that about covers it. Still got the vinyl too, including all the Blondie albums and Nina Hagen's 10-inch American debut. Just pull that out for intimate cocktail parties. Loaded the CDs into the Mac, about 9000 songs. Lot of it crap though so I rate my faves five stars and pull them into a playlist that I play scrambled everyday for musical wallpaper.

I have in the neighborhood of 38gb of music stored in itunes, about 500 CDs some of which i have ripped, but i don't necessarilly know which ones i still have left to do. I have around a couple hundred records that either I've bought or absconded with from family. I received a package out of the blue from the mom of one of my friends in high school, and in it was about a dozen cassette tapes mostly some mix tapes, but some albums too, and it was like i was transported back to 1991. Some of the tapes cringe worthy, some still hold up.

Mucky Fingers / September 23, 2008 11:08 AM

700 store-bought CDs and at least 100 burned CDs of illegal downloads, many of which I give away to friends after tiring of them. 100 vinyl records, including my father's collection. 50 cassette tapes which are my nostalgia trophies from high school and great badges of what was hip-n-cool in the late 80s. About 30GB on my Zune, which amounts to about 500 albums.

Carrie / September 23, 2008 11:46 AM

Lame-- not sure how many CDs, but not many...75? Tapes from HS that I just can't get rid of. I plan to start downloading music now that I have a computer at home. I like listening to totally cheesy radio stations and that always satisfies my cheesy music craving and rarely do I feel the need to go buy an entire cheese album.

Darin Cassler / September 24, 2008 10:57 AM

I rid myself of CDs a few years ago. Now I have about 100GB of music, much of it lossless rips. I also have about 100 vinyl albums of varying RPMs.

Taking this another way... Without getting into CD/digital counts, I'm wondering about digital formats. Are you ripping/downloading files and keeping music in MP3, WMA, M4x, etc. and why are you choosing the format you did? I've got a mix of formats (WMA and MP3, no iTunes since I don't have an iPod) and want to know what people are standardizing on.
