Writing About Race @ Blackstone Branch Library

Tonight the Blackstone Branch Library welcomes Frank Joseph, author of To Love Mercy, a novel about misunderstandings between races. He'll not only discuss his work on the novel, but also his current work on a book about the 1966 Chicago race riots. Free at 7pm in the library's auditorium, 4004 S. Wednesday Club: Charles Dickens

The Newberry Library's Wednesday Club offers the chance for like minds to socialize and enjoy learning about a wide range of topics. Tonight's club focuses on Charles Dickens -- "Sentiment, Materialism and Commerce" -- and James Chandler, director of the University of Chicago's Franke Institute for the Humanities, will be on hand to discuss A Christmas Carol in relation to Dickens's other novels. Admission is $9 and includes beverages and light refreshments; the reception will start at 5:30pm and the program will begin at 6:15pm. Purse Bazaar

How often do you get to spend $20 for beer, wine, and appetizers and know that your money goes to help children who are living with AIDS? Not very often right? Add in the ability to bid on fabulous designer handbangs (local and international designers) and you've got a fantastic trifecta of fabulousness. Pediatric AIDS Chicago is hosting it's annual Purse Bazaar tonight at Mystic Celt (3443 N. Southport Ave.) from 6-10 pm.

Andy Moor & DJ /Rupture @ The Hideout

Andy Moor, guitarist for The Ex, will be facing-off with DJ /Rupture at the Hideout tonight. The duo have been working on a collaborative project of late, and tonight's appearance is one of only two such preview performances that they'll br performing in the U.S. as /Rupture accompanies The Ex on tour. (Check the Transmissions page for further details.) The opening set of the evening will be from the jazz ensemble Herculaneum, as a record release party for their new album. Chicago guitarist/sound artist Kevin Drumm will be spinning records between sets. The evening's events are presented as part of the Hideout's Immediate Sound jazz series. 1354 N. Wabansia. Everything gets underway at 9:30pm, admission is $8.
