Jewish Mothers: A Staged Reading

Nextbook and NPR correspondent Susan Stamberg hostthis evening of celebrating the Jewish mother in literature. Dramatic readings will explore Jewish mothers in the works of Henry Rother, Grace Paley, Mordecai Richler and Cynthia Ozick, traveling as far back as the Bible and going right up to the present. 7pm at the Abby Pub, 3420 W. Growing Home Chicago's 5th Annual Benefit

Growing Home Chicago's annual benefit dinner is tonight from 6 to 9 P.M. at the Garfield Park Conservatory. In addition to supporting their cause, your $80 ticket gets you a gourmet dinner made by the likes of Michael Altenberg, Greg Christian Catering, Fox & Obel, Lula Cafe, and Shawn McClain. May Day March for Immigrants Rights

After last Tuesday's raid of a mall in Little Village, immigration tensions and issues are back at the front of many people's minds and hearts. Join thousand's in a protest for immigrant rights at this year's May Day March (the worker's holiday that started in Chicago but nobody really celebrated seriously untill last year's immigrant rights organizers reclaimed it). The fun starts at 3pm @ 50 W. Washington St.

Elizabeth Berg @ Book Cellar

Bestselling local author Elizabeth Berg stops by the Book Cellar to discuss her new book, Dream When You're Feeling Blue. The novel follows three Irish sisters living in Chicago during World War II. "Dirty Dancing" 20th Anniversary Screening

Proving the steel-like endurance and cultural power of teen movies, the 20th anniversary re-release of "Dirty Dancing" will be shown tonight (and tomorrow) at 7:30 p.m. at the AMC River East 21 (at 322 East Illinois). In addition to the visual treat of mid-career Swayze, you'll also get to see a documentary about the making of the movie, complete with cast interviews. Click here for tickets.

Celebration @ Empty Bottle

The Baltimore trio Celebration play a headline set at the Bottle tonight. For a three-piece, they're exceptionally tight and ferocious, and uber-emotive vocalist Katrina Ford has a voice that can blister paint from fifty paces. After the release of their impressive 2005 self-titled debut on 4AD, they've just completed a second album which was reportedly produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek. If you've missed them the past couple of times they've come through town, here's a good time to catch them. Aleks & The Drummer and Tirra Lirra open. 1035 N. Western.
