Indian Jewelry @ Hideout

Psychedelic drone rockers Indian Jewelry arrive in town to play the Hideout tonight. Hailing from Houston, TX, the band -- with their constantly changing and expanding line -- has built a reputation for itself the past few years for its ability to hypnotize audiences with its frenzied stage shows. Local stoner-rock misfits Warhammer 48K play on the opening bill, resuming activity after many months in suspended animation. Doors open at 9 PM, admission is $8. 1354 W. Wabansia.

Children's Humanities Festival

The Children’s Humanities Festival (the youthful counterpart to the adults’ autumnal event) begins today and runs through May 10. Child-friendly theater, music, and interactive performances will be taking place across the city with offerings for those five and older, though some performances are more appropriate for teen audiences. Kids (and adults) can listen to traditional Mexican fandango music, help stretch 12 miles of elastic, or see a Japanese garden come to life.

Most of the activities are free for those 17 and under. Older participants pay $5 in advance or $10 at the door. Many of the events are accessible to those with special needs and those whose primary language is not English. For more information and a schedule of events, visit the Chicago Humanities Festival website.

Skip Rope Revolution @ Mess Hall

Mess Hall hosts an evening for grown-ups to play again. Recall the glory days of "Heads Up Seven Up", fortune-telling, hopscotch, and -- certainly -- skipping rope.
