Death + Extinction: A Polaroid Exhibition

Come to the The Chicago Art Department, located at 1837 South Halsted, to see a collaboration between New York and Chicago artists memorializing the soon-to-be-departed mediumof Polaroid film. Opening night runs from 6:00 pm-10:00 pm, with the overall exhibition spanning through September 1st. Call 773-852-1717 for more information.

Girls Rock! Chicago Showcase Extravaganza @ Metro

After girls ages 9 to 16 learn how to rock out in a week-long summer camp, the girls play The Metro, 3730 N. Clark St.. The program, run by Girls Rock! Chicago, teaches the creative and technical aspects of musician ship, including hands-on instrument instruction, composition, song-writing, daily band practice and guest speakers in the rock biz. Girls Rock! Chicago is a non-profit working to foster girl's creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness through rock music. Doors are at 3pm, show starts at 3:30pm. $6. Open to everyone.

A Biography of Honey @ Green City Market

Ever wanted to know more about how honey goes from bee to cute little squeezable bear container? Join the Chicago Public Library and Holley Bishop, beekeeper and author of Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey, The Sweet Liquid Gold that Seduced the World, at 12pm at the Green City Market as she reads from and discusses her book that celebrates all the wonderful work of the honeybee. Free. Green City Market is located at the south end of Lincoln Park between 1849 N. Clark St. and Stockton Dr.

Urban Farm Field Day @ City Farm

Learn about urban farming, starting off at City Farm at 10 a.m. with a tour and chat with grower Tim Wilson. Regroup at Green City Market at 11:30 to hear Sheri Doyel and Dennis Fiser of Tomato Mountain Farm. Stay to hear about bees at noon. $5 to register. More info.

Open House Dance Collective @ Vittum Theater

Open House Dance Collective, a division of HouseHold Arts Collective, invites community members--regardless of training or skill level--to come rehearse with professional choreographers. They perform professionally every summer, and this weekend's "OHD 5" is this year's culmination. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Inspiration Cafe, which provides restaurant-style meals, life skills training, case management, and other services at their Uptown location to help men and women overcome the causes of their homelessness. Come see your neighbors-cum-professional dancers, as well as an appearance by Jump Rhythm Jazz Project.

Fabulous Food Firsts Tour @ Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs’ Culinary Director will lead a tour featuring stops at famous institutions where foods like brownies and other beverages and cooking equipment were first created. The tour will run from 10 am to noon and will leave from the Chicago Cultural Center at 77 E Randolph St. The cost is $10. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 312-742-8497.
