WNYC's Radiolab: Martian Invasion @ Victory Gardens
Radiolab, a spectacular WNYC radio program, comes to Chicago for two nights of shows. Their topic: "Martian Invasion", specifically the legendary "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast of 1938. "Martian Invasion" runs tonight and tomorrow night at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater (2433 N. Lincoln) at 7:30pm. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased through the Victory Gardens Website or by calling the box office at (773) 871-3000.
Jefferson Park Bike Tour
Big Shoulders Realty hosts a bike tour of Jefferson Park today, paying close attention to the unique elements that make up this neighborhood. The three hour tour, which will cover about 15-20 miles, will make a number of stops that will explore the history of some of the significant bits of architecture in this area, known as the "Gateway to Chicago." This event is free to all and only requires a helmet and bike. Meet at 1pm at the Jefferson Park fieldhouse (4822 N. Long). Call 773-481-0244 for more information.
Open Books Great American Book Drive
If you've got more books than bookshelves and are looking for a good way to get them off your hands, head over to Open Books today for their Great American Book Drive. Open Books is a nonprofit literacy bookstore and the proceeds from your donations will go toward funding literacy programs for children and adults in Chicago. Not only do you get to do something good while making space for new books, you don't even have to get out of your car to do it! Volunteers will unload and process your donations, so all you have to do is get the books there. (And if you can't do that, but still want to donate, sign up for one of their house calls.) The drive is free from 10am-4pm at 213 W. Institute Pl. Call 312-239-6649 for more information.
Chicago International Film Festival
The Chicago International Film Festival runs until October 29 at several theaters across the city. Box office is at the AMC River East 21 at Illinois & Fairbanks and the AMC at 600 North Michigan; you can also buy tickets online.
Sunday Parkways
A network of boulevards from will be closed to motorized traffic but open to bicycles and pedestrians. Come out with your bike, stroller, wheelchair, skateboard, or just bring a picnic and sit along the route, chatting with your friends. The first installation of Sunday Parkways runs from Logan Square to Garfield Park (Fullerton to Madison) from 9am to 1pm on October 5. The second Sunday Parkways runs from Garfield Park to Little Village (Madison to 24th Boulevard) from 9am to 1pm on October 26. See how similar events have worked in other cities around the world.
