Ben Greenman @ Borders Lincoln Park

New Yorker editor and short story author Ben Greenman is here to discuss his latest work, Celebrity Chekov, which takes an assortment of the famous Russian author's tales, and works modern-day celebrities into them in a way that has been described as "strange," "high-concept," "at once a tribute and travesty," and "rectangular." 2817 North Clark St., 7pm. Free.

Jason Rothstein and John Greenfield @ Quimby's

Bike on down to Quimby's tonight for readings from two of Chicago's "active transportation" experts. Jason Rothstein will read from and sign copies of Carless in Chicago. Greg Borzo, author of The Chicago L calls it "very timely, practical not preachy, up-to-date advice about thriving in the Windy City without owning a car. Rothstein coolly lays out some real benefits of selling your car: More cash and better health; more free time and less stress; a cleaner environment and a more human-scale city. This book that will change the way you think about cars. It might even change your life." Local journalist and occasional Gapers Block contributor John Greenfield will read from and sign copies of Bars Across America. It's the story of his 5,000-mile bike journey from Oregon to Maine and the 48 taverns visited along the way. Dave Glowacz, author of Urban Bikers' Tips and Tricks, says "as John spins his yarn across the U.S., you'll wish you'd gone along." As if that's not enough, John will also perform a few songs about cycling at this event. Ride on! Free. Quimby's, 1854 W. North, 7pm.

Cocktail Class and Adopt-an-Herb @ Nacional 27

Next up in Nacional 27's monthly cocktail class series: heirloom apple- and pear-based drinks. Mixologist Adam Seger will demonstrate two cocktails -- an apple/pear sangria with a local apple wine base, and a hard cider-spiked pear and apple mojito. The class fee -- which is $27, of course -- includes cocktail samples, passed appetizers, and recipe cards.

After the class, the restaurant will host its second annual Adopt-an-Herb cocktail party -- aspiring plant parents will have the opportunity to take home a plant from N27's Mojito Garden. The party's free, and will include passed appetizers and a cash bar. Adopters will receive a plant, an adoption certificate, plant care instructions, and recipe cards for re-creating Seger's herbed cocktails at home.

Nacional 27's located at 325 W. Huron. The cocktail class starts at 5:30pm, and the adopt-an-herb party kicks off at 7pm. Don't dawdle -- plants are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Four Tet and Matthew Dear @ Metro

Four Tet, aka the lightly unclassifiable Kieran Hebden, will make Chicago the site of his first stateside performance after a summer touring Europe. For the first time since April 2009, Chicagoans will get the chance to dance (or at least undulate?) to his skittering, mellow, and constantly evolving catalog on Thursday the 14th at Smart Bar. Since he last stopped by, 2010's There Is Love In You found Four Tet winning some of his best critical acclaim yet (including a Best New Music title from Pitchfork) for a collection of tunes field-tested and adjusted at London's famous Plastic People nightclub.

Tickets are $20 in advance. Doors open at 8pm. The Metro is located at 3730 N. Clark St. (773) 549-4140. This show is 18+.
