Facets Cinematheque presents Facets Night School, its occasional series of midnight cult film screenings paired with guest lecture/discussion sessions. Tonight's movie is Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 movie Pusher. The discussion of the film will be headed by Chris Damen, co-manager of Facet's rentals department. The stretch of Milwaukee between California and Kimball becomes a network of art galleries, performance spaces, and entertainment venues from Friday to Sunday. Music, food, and art are on the bill. Event runs today from noon-11pm.

In conjunction with the Third Annual Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (July 29-31), the Logan Square café Nothin' Less (2642 N. Milwaukee) is hosting an event called "Around the World in Eighty Hours" which features music, dance, martial arts, film, and any other type of performance representing foreign cultures from all over the world. Today's lineup features: Argentinian tango at 3pm; Mexican folk music by Yahvi Pichardo & Maria McCollough at 6pm; and the Old Town School Brazilian Ensemble, featuring Paulinho Garcia at 7pm. In honor of the birth of poetry slams, Chicago Slam Works is hosting a birthday bash that will blow the top off of slams everywhere. The Poetry Slam 25th Birthday Extravaganza will take place at the Metro (3730 N. Clark) tonight, starting at 8pm (6pm if you have Pre-Show VIP tickets). The party will feature Slam Champions and slammers from all over the globe, including a group from Germany! And as if that isn't enough, there will also be live slam translations and music. Who doesn't like foraging through great books for even greater deals? If you count yourself among those so inclined, stop by Women & Children First today or tomorrow for their annual used book sale. You'll find steals on "fiction, nonfiction, children's books, LGBTQ titles, CDs, DVDs, and collectables" -- all for a good cause. Proceeds from the weekend benefit the bookstore's non-profit arm, the Women's Voices Fund, which supports all the wonderful programming they make free to the public. July 30 - 31st, 10am - 7pm.
The Windy City Rollers' travel roller derby teams play play their first home bout of the season tonight at the UIC Pavilion, Harrison and Racine. The Second Wind face the Gotham Wall St. Traitors, while the All Stars are up against the Steel City Derby Demons. Tickets are $20-35. First match is at 6pm.
