History of Austrian Breads @ Kendall College

Learn more about the breads of our European friends this morning at Kendall College, 900 North Branch. Austrian Michael Mikusch (of the Austrian Bakery and Deli) will give demos and history of the ryes and strudels that put his homeland on the culinary map. Event runs 10am-noon; admission $5, $3 for Kendall students. Organized by the Culinary Historians of Chicago.

Facets Fright School: The Frighteners

Facets Multimedia presents the final screening of Facets Night School, their semi-regular series of midnight cult movie screenings paired with lectures on the films' subjects (renamed Facets Fright School for this run, due to this series' focus on horror films). Tonight's screening: Peter Jackson's The Frighteners from 1996, with Michael J. Fox as an architect who can communicate with the spirit world (yes, really). Halloween Spooktacular 2011 Day 1 @ Challengers Comics

Daytime (3pm-5pm): All-ages treats and fun. Costumes encouraged. Nighttime (8pm-late): Grown-up treats and drinks. Costumes required. All hosted by Jill Thompson, creator of Scary Godmother. Free, but you should totally buy a comic to support one of Chicago's best comic book stores. All takes place at 1845 N. Western Ave. 2R.

Carrera de los Muertos 5k

The UNO 5k Carrera de los Muertos, aka the Race of the Dead, starts at 8am today from the Bartolome de las Casas campus, 1641 W 16th St. in Pilsen. Registration is $35 online until Oct. 26, $40 day of the race.

Panic @ Darkroom

The long-running Panic has always thrown a memorable Halloween bash with live bands covering the loyal crowd's favorites. This year the Handsome Devilz play the Smiths & Morrissey, All Mods Conned play the Jam and Airiel plays the Pet Shop Boys. Resident DJs Pogo and Arturo spin the hits, too. Doors are at 9PM. It's free before 10PM, $8 after. Darkroom's at 2210 W Chicago.

Nightmare on Elm Street @ Patio Theatre

The Patio Theatre, 6008 W. Irving Park Rd., hosts a special screening of the original 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street at 10pm. Tickets are just $3. Details on Facebook.

"Scary Canary" Halloween Bash

The Red Canary,695 N. Milwaukee Ave., will host the "Scary Canary" Halloween bash from 9pm-3am tonight. Don your creepiest wittiest or most original costume for a chance to win the $1,000 cash prize. Second and third place winners will also receive a prize and judging will be held at 1am by applause. Guest can dance the night away to the mash ups and beats straight from the nights DJ. Karaoke Costume Party

Kicking off the Halloween weekend the right way Timothy O'Toole's Pub, 622 N. Fairbanks Ct., will host their annual Halloween Karaoke Costume Party with a $200 cash prize for the best dressed. Judging will take place at midnight. In addition to all the costumes participants are encouraged to pick out a song and karaoke the night away starting at 10pm. Free to attend. 10pm-3am.

Bottomless Pig Roast

Division Ale House, 1942 W. Division St., will be celebrating the Purdue Homecoming game today at 11am by offering an all-you-can-eat roast pig with sides and accompaniments. The pig meal package also includes Miller Lite Drafts and goes from 11am-2pm. There will also be a prix-fixe brunch for $25 dollars, which will include brunch entrees and breakfast cocktails- also from 11am-2pm. The Art of Collecting @ Little Black Pearl Art and Design Center

Today at 2pm, the Little Black Pearl Art and Design Center, 1060 E. 47th St., presents "The Art of Collecting," with a panel of local artists, gallery owners, collectors and all around art enthusiasts who will discuss the value of collecting original fine art. Diane Christiansen @ Kasia Kay Projects Gallery

This ingenious Chicago artist brings her intriguing blend of painting, drawing, video and installation works to Kay's established West Loop gallery. Diane Christiansen, "Enough Space in the Head to Breathe," runs tonight through November 26, 2011 at Kasia Kay Projects Gallery, 215 N.
